Alexander Bryce (minister)
Alexander Bryce (1713–1786) was a Church of Scotland minister, mathematician, astonomer, scientist and poet who was Chaplain in Ordinary to King George III from 1770 to 1786. He was a polymath and a friend of Robert Wallace and Colin Maclaurin. In 1772 he explained the principles of creating an altimeter ultimately put into use to create the instruments. Life He was born at Boarland in Kincardine-on-Forth in 1713. He was educated at both Doune and Kilmadock School. He graduated MA from Edinburgh University in 1735. From 1740 he acted as a private tutor in mathematics and astronomy (under patronage of Colin Maclaurin) in the Caithness area for three years where he became locally unpopular for mapping and tabulating shipwrecks on the coast in an attempt to prove a higher than expected number as evidence of "wreckers". Alexander Bryce (British Army Officer)
Major General Sir Alexander Bryce, KCH (23 January 1766 – 4 October 1832) was a British soldier and colonel-commandant in the Royal Engineers. Life He was born in East Calder manse on 23 January 1766 the son of the polymath, Rev Alexander Bryce and his wife Janet Gillespie daughter of the Provost of Stirling. His twin brother James Bryce became an Edinburgh surgeon. His father became Chaplain in Ordinary to King George III.Fasti Ecclesiastae Scoticana by Hew Scott Bryce entered the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, as a cadet on 7 October 1782, and passed out as a second lieutenant, Royal Artillery, on 25 August 1787. Alexander Bryce (physician)
Alexander Bryce (4 April 1863 - 7 June 1942) was a Scottish physician and dietitian. Bryce was born on 4 April 1863. He graduated M.B. with honours from Glasgow University and won the Brunton Memorial Prize in 1886. He obtained his M.D. in 1893 with honours. After graduation he was House-Surgeon to the Paisley Infirmary and Fever Hospital for several years. In 1894 he began practicing medicine in Birmingham and developed an interest in dietetics. In 1923, he was appointed as chief medical officer for an insurance company where he remained until his retirement in 1939. Bryce's ''The Laws of Life and Health'' was described in a review by the ''Journal of the American Medical Association'' as "one that the physician can conscientiously recommend to his patients because of the sterling common sense which characterizes it and the absence of "fads" and "notions."
