Alexander Bethune (politician)
Alexander Bethune (January 31, 1852 – June 10, 1947), merchant, was the 12th Mayor of Vancouver, British Columbia, serving from 1907 to 1908. He had previously served seven years as alderman. Early and family life Bethune was born in Peterborough, Ontario to William B. and Catherine (née Dingwall) Bethune. He married Catherine MacIntosh of Paisley, Ontario in 1878, and they had two daughters. A Presbyterian church, Bethune enjoyed hunting, fishing and motoring as hobbies. He was also a Freemason and founding member of Acacia Lodge No. 22. Career After completing his education in Ontario, he moved to Manitou, Manitoba in 1887 where he entered the hardware business. He also served as postmaster of Manitou as well as on the city council as an alderman. He moved further west in 1890, to Vancouver. Alexander Bethune (bishop)
Alexander Neil Bethune (August 28, 1800 – February 3, 1879) was a Church of England clergyman and bishop. Early and Family Life The son of the Reverend John Bethune of Williamstown, Ontario, the founding Church of Scotland minister for Upper Canada, Alexander Neil Bethune married Jane Eliza Crooks (1809–1861), the daughter of the Hon. James Crooks (1778–1860) and Jane Cummings (1791–1861). Alexander and Eliza had ten children. They included Robert Henry Bethune, a noted banker with the Dominion Bank. He brother John, also a clergyman, was acting principal of McGill University from 1835 to 1846. Other notable brothers included businessman James Gray, fur trader Angus and politician Donald. The family was part of the Family Compact, the political clique which ran Upper Canada for decades. Alexander Bethune (1804–1843) was a short-lived Scottish weaver-poet. Twice crippled by explosions, he was said to be very disfigured and looked "prematurely aged". Life He was born on 7 January 1804 in a cottage on the estate of Upper (or Over) Rankeilour House in the parish of Monimail in central Fife. He was the eldest son of Alexander Bethune (d.1838), a farm labourer and weaver, and his wife Alison Christie (d.1840). He was the elder brother of John Bethune. In 1813 the family moved to Lochend Farm near Lindores Loch in the parish of Abdie. In 1822 he was employed alongside his brother breaking rocks to create a new toll road in Fife from Lindores to Newburgh. He returned again to labouring after his weaving venture collapsed in 1825. Mainly working in quarrying and road-building he was blown up in a quarry explosion in 1829 and not expected to live. He recovered and returned to the same line of work.
