Albert Cushing Read
Albert Cushing Read, Sr. (March 29, 1887 – October 10, 1967) was an aviator and Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. He and his crew made the first transatlantic flight in the ''NC-4'', a Curtiss NC flying boat. Early life and Atlantic crossing Read was born in Lyme, New Hampshire on March 29, 1887 into a Boston Brahmin family. He attended the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, graduating in the class of 1907. In 1915, he was designated naval aviator number 24. As a Lieutenant Commander in May 1919, Read commanded a crew of five on the ''NC-4'' Curtiss flying boat, the first aircraft ever to make a transatlantic flight, a couple of weeks before Alcock and Brown's non-stop flight, and eight years before Charles Lindbergh's solo, non-stop flight. Read's flight started from Rockaway Beach, Long Island, took 23 days before arriving in Plymouth, England. Science Discovery Center Of Oneonta
The Science Discovery Center of Oneonta is a hands-on science museum that is a part of SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, New York. The museum features more than eighty simple science experiments, focusing mainly on physics, for children as well as for adults. In addition to regular visitor hours, the center hosts school and other groups. It also sponsors special events in science education, such as Nano Days and provides family-friendly activities for major events such as Homecoming Weekend and the Otsego County Fair. History The museum was the result of the hard work and dedication of Albert Read, a physics professor at SUNY Oneonta from 1957 to 1985. After his retirement, he planned and designed the center and housed it in a room formerly used for batting practice. The official dedication took place on January 21, 1990. Al Read
Alfred Read (3 March 1909 – 9 September 1987) was a British radio comedian active throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Originally a businessman, he has been described as highly influential on British comedy. Early life Read was born in Broughton, Salford, Lancashire. On leaving school he worked at the family meat processing firm, E. and H. Read Ltd, initially as a salesman before becoming a director in his early 20s. He always wanted to perform - on one occasion, when he was 18, he performed impressions of Maurice Chevalier in clubs in Bolton, before being found by his father and having to return to work as a meat products salesman. After his father died, he started running the family business, while continuing to take opportunities to entertain at local dinners and in clubs.
