Alan Marshal (cricketer)
Alan Marshal (12 June 1883 – 23 July 1915) was a cricketer who played first-class cricket for Queensland and for Surrey County Cricket Club. Marshal was a hard-hitting middle-order batsman and a fast-medium bowler who got some spin off the pitch. He was 6 ft 3 ins in height. Biography Marshal was educated and played cricket for South Brisbane State School and Brisbane Grammar School, later progressing to club cricket, playing for South Brisbane and with Paddington in Sydney. Marshal had played just eleven games for Queensland – at that time not part of the Sheffield Shield competition – when he arrived in England in 1905. He proceeded to make more than 2,700 runs in club cricket, principally for W. G. Grace's London County Cricket Club, and also played a few first-class matches for amateur teams. Wisden Cricketers Of The Year
The ''Wisden'' Cricketers of the Year are cricketers selected for the honour by the annual publication ''Wisden Cricketers' Almanack'', based primarily on their "influence on the previous English season". The award began in 1889 with the naming of "Six Great Bowlers of the Year", and continued with the naming of "Nine Great Batsmen of the Year" in 1890 and "6 Great Wicket-Keepers" in 1891. Since 1897, with a few notable exceptions, the annual award has recognised five players of the year. No players were named in 1916 or 1917, as the First World War prevented any first-class cricket being played in England, while in 1918 and 1919 the recipients were five schoolboy cricketers. From 1941 to 1946, the Second World War caused the same issue and no players were named. Three players have been sole recipients: W. G. Grace (1896), Plum Warner (1921) and Jack Hobbs (1926). Alan Marshal (born Alan M Willey 29 January 1909 – 9 July 1961) was an actor who performed on stage in the United States and in Hollywood films. He was sometimes billed as Alan Marshall or Alan Willey. Biography Early life Born Alan M Willey in Sydney, Australia, he was the son of popular Queensland stage actress Irby (Agnes) Marshal and English actor-producer Leonard Willey. The family left Australia in mid 1914, when he was five years old. Willey and Marshal appeared in several Australian films made in 1912 – including '' The Strangler's Grip'' (1912) and '' The Mystery of the Black Pearl'' (1912), both directed by Franklyn Barrett. Irby and Leonard continued their successful careers on the stage in the United States, first in San Francisco then in New York.
