Alan Curtis (British Actor)
Alan Vernon Curtis (30 July 1930 – 18 February 2021) was an English actor and cricket announcer. Life and career Curtis was born in Coulsdon, Surrey in July 1930. He had a long career in the film, television and theatre, which included appearances in four films of cult director Pete Walker. He also served as an announcer for the MCC at Lord's Cricket Ground for 28 years. Curtis lived in Chiswick, where he died in February 2021 aged 90. ''Tiffany Jones'' is a 1973 British comedy film directed and produced by Pete Walker and starring Anouska Hempel as the titular character. It was based on the British daily comic strip series '' Tiffany Jones'' by Pat Tourret and Jenny Butterworth. Other roles were performed by Ray Brooks and Eric Pohlmann. Plot The film focuses on Tiffany Jones, a photo model in Swinging London. However, here she also has a double life as a secret agent. The plot follows her as she tries to topple an Eastern European dictatorship in the fictional country Zirdana. Players' Theatre
The Players' Theatre was a London theatre which opened at 43 King Street, Covent Garden, on 18 October 1936. The club originally mounted period-style musical comedies, introducing Victorian-style music hall in December 1937. The threat of World War II German bombing prompted a move in October 1940 to a basement at 13 Albemarle Street, Piccadilly and then after the cessation of hostilities, to Villiers Street, Charing Cross, opening on 14 February 1946. Other intermediate locations of the theatre include the Arts Theatre and the St John's Wood private residence of a member, Francis Iles (Anthony Berkeley). Overwhelmed by debt, the theatre closed in 2002, although the Players' Theatre Club continues to perform music hall shows in other venues. ''Whoops Baghdad'' is a BBC television comedy programme first broadcast from 25 January to 1 March 1973. It stars Frankie Howerd, and was similar to his earlier programme ''Up Pompeii!'', with the setting moved from Ancient Rome to mediaeval Baghdad. However, it was less successful than its predecessor, only running for six episodes and is little remembered, although all episodes apparently survive. The original proposed title, ''Up Baghdad'', was rejected because it was felt that it might have been seen as supportive of the then-current Iraqi regime. It was produced by ITC Entertainment and had a single season of 26 one-hour episodes that aired from 1971 to 1972. ''Up Pompeii!'' is a British television comedy series broadcast between 1969 and 1970, starring Frankie Howerd. The first series was written by Talbot Rothwell, a scriptwriter for the ''Carry On'' films, and the second series by Rothwell and Sid Colin. Two later specials were transmitted in 1975 and 1991 and a film adaptation was released in 1971. Background ''Up Pompeii!'' first appeared in the Comedy Playhouse series, after Michael Mills and Tom Sloan from BBC Comedy and Light Entertainment visited the ruins of Pompeii. Since Mills had recently seen Frankie Howerd in the stage musical '' A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum'' he casually remarked to Sloan that he half expected Howerd to suddenly appear round the corner. Eric Morecambe (John Eric Bartholomew, 14 May 1926 – 28 May 1984) and Ernie Wise (Ernest Wiseman, 27 November 1925 – 21 March 1999), known as Morecambe and Wise (and sometimes as Eric and Ernie), were an English comic double act, working in variety, radio, film and most successfully in television. ''The War Machines'' is the ninth and final serial of the third season of the British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who'', which was first broadcast in 4 weekly parts from 25 June to 16 July 1966. The serial is set in 1960s London, shortly after construction of the Post Office Tower was completed.
