Alajärven Ankkurit
Alajärven Ankkurit ( "Alajärvi Anchors") is a Finnish sports club from Alajärvi. It was founded in 1944. Alajärven Ankkurit has participated in many sports in Finland over the years, such as athletics, skiing and volleyball. Since 1980s, the club's main successes have been in pesäpallo. Alajärven Ankkurit is playing in the top-tier Superpesis. Alajärven Ankkurit has won the men's Finnish Pesäpallo Championship (Superpesis) two times in years 1988 and 1989. The home ground of Alajärven Ankkurit is the Kitro Stadium. History Alajärven Ankkurit was founded in 1944. The club operates as a general club. Besides pesäpallo, the strongest sports are athletics, skiing and orienteering. Kitro Stadium is a pesäpallo stadium located in Alajärvi, Finland. Since its opening in 1990, it has been the home field of the Alajärven Ankkurit, a Superpesis The Superpesis, known as SM-sarja from 1955 to 1989, is the top professional pesäpallo league in Finland. It was created in 1990 to replace the SM-sarja which was fundamentally an amateur league. The Superpesis is directly overseen by the Finnis ... team. The current pesäpallo stadium was built in the summer of 1990, but pesäpallo has been played at the same site for much longer. The field was resurfaced in the summer of 2012, when the Ankkurit were promoted to the main league after a break of several years. One of the special features of the field is the high pitches that disappear into the sun in cloudless weather. The name Kitro comes from the Kidron Valley in the Bible. Superpesis
The Superpesis, known as SM-sarja from 1955 to 1989, is the top professional pesäpallo league in Finland. It was created in 1990 to replace the SM-sarja which was fundamentally an amateur league. The Superpesis is directly overseen by the Finnish Pesäpallo Association. Both the men's and women's top division is called Superpesis. Comprising 13 teams in the men's league and 12 teams in the women's league, one team faces relegation to Ykköspesis at the end of the season. Superpesis was founded in 1990; before that the top division was called ''SM-sarja'' (Finnish Championship). Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. Pesäpallo (; sv, boboll, both names literally meaning "nest ball", colloquially known in Finnish as pesis, also referred to as Finnish baseball) is a fast-moving bat-and-ball sport that is often referred to as the national sport of Finland and has some presence in other countries including Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, and Canada's northern Ontario (the latter two countries have significant Nordic populations). The game is similar to brännboll, rounders, and lapta, as well as baseball. Pesäpallo is a combination of traditional ball-batting team games and North American baseball, invented by Lauri "Tahko" Pihkala in the 1920s. Reijo Untamo Vähälä (born 7 March 1946) is a Finnish former high jumper. He placed second in men's high jump at the 1969 European Athletics Championships. Career In 1966 Vähälä won both the Finnish championship (2.04 m) and the Finnish under-21 championship (2.01 m) in men's high jump. In 1969 he only placed third at the Finnish championships and was not considered a potential medalist at the European Championships in Athens, but in the championship final he improved his Finnish record of 2.13 m twice, clearing first 2.14 m and then 2.17 m. Two other jumpers, Valentin Gavrilov of the Soviet Union and Erminio Azzaro of Italy, also cleared 2.17 m, and the medals were decided on countback with Vähälä winning a surprising silver.
