Alaa Al-Siddiq
Alaa Al-Siddiq ( ar, آلاء الصدّيق; 18 June 1988 – 19 June 2021) was a UK-based Emirati poet and a prominent human rights activist. Education Born in Sharjah to an educated and religious family, Alaa received a bachelor's degree in Shariah from the University of Sharjah in 2010, graduating with first class honors. She was the president of the Emirates National Student Union between 2007 and 2008. In the context of the Arab Spring#United Arab Emirates (2011), 2011 Arab Spring, Alaa had begun creating a youth petition group made up of fellow students and would have frequent meetups both in person and online to discuss human rights issues and what they can do to improve the lives of other Emirates. Sharjah
Sharjah (; ar, ٱلشَّارقَة ', Gulf Arabic: ''aš-Šārja'') is the third-most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, after Dubai and Abu Dhabi, forming part of the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. Sharjah is the capital of the eponymous emirate. ''The New Arab'' or ''Al-Araby Al-Jadeed'' ( ar, العربي الجديد) is a pan-Arab news website headquartered in London. It was first launched in March 2014 as an online news website by Qatari company Fadaat Media. It went on to establish a daily newspaper in September 2014. In 2015, Fadaat launched Al Araby TV Network as a counterweight to Al Jazeera, which is viewed by the BBC to hold a pro-Muslim Brotherhood bias. History Dr. Azmi Bishara, a Doha-based ex- member of Israeli parliament, founded the Arabic-language news website as the first platform launched by ''Al-Araby Al-Jadeed'' in March 2014. Laura Poitras (; born February 2, 1964) is an American director and producer of documentary films. Poitras has received numerous awards for her work, including the 2015 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for ''Citizenfour'', about Edward Snowden, while ''My Country, My Country'' received a nomination in the same category in 2007. NSO Group
NSO Group Technologies (NSO standing for Niv, Shalev and Omri, the names of the company's founders) is an Israeli cyber-intelligence firm primarily known for its proprietary spyware Pegasus, which is capable of remote zero-click surveillance of smartphones. It employed almost 500 people as of 2017. NSO claims that it provides authorized governments with technology that helps them combat terror and crime. The company says that it deals with government clients only. ''Pegasus'' spyware is classified as a weapon by Israel and any export of the technology must be approved by the government. Omar Abdulaziz Al- Zahrani ( ar, عمر بن عبد العزيز الزهراني) is a Saudi Arabian dissident video blogger and activist living in exile in Montreal, Canada. He was close friends and worked with Jamal Khashoggi, as recounted in the film ''The Dissident'' (2020). He is a member of the National Assembly Party. Biography He hosts a YouTube satire program known for its criticism of the kingdom and its leadership. Consulting firm McKinsey & Company named Abdulaziz in an internal report as one of the top Saudi influencers on Twitter. Jamal Khashoggi
Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi (; ar, جمال أحمد خاشقجي, Jamāl ʾAḥmad Ḵāšuqjī, ; 13 October 1958 – 2 October 2018) was a Saudi journalist, dissident, author, columnist for ''Middle East Eye'' and ''The Washington Post'', and a general manager and editor-in-chief of Al-Arab News Channel who was assassinated at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October 2018 by agents of the Saudi government, allegedly at the behest of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He also served as editor for the Saudi Arabian newspaper '' Al Watan'', turning it into a platform for Saudi progressives. Gulf Center For Human Rights
The Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) is an independent non-profit charity that defends human rights in the Persian Gulf and neighbouring states that include, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Yemen, UAE, Oman, Iran, Qatar, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, and Lebanon. The GCHR is funded by the Sigrid Rausing Trust. Its vision is "To develop and protect a sustainable network of human rights defenders in the Gulf region." They are based in Lebanon. The organisation was co-founded by Khalid Ibrahim along with Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja and Nabeel Rajab, Bahraini activists who have both been jailed in Bahrain.
