Al Columbia
Al Columbia (born 1970) is an American artist known for his horror and black humor-themed alternative comics. His published works include the comic book series ''The Biologic Show'', the graphic novel/art book '' Pim & Francie: The Golden Bear Days'', and short stories such as "I Was Killing When Killing Wasn't Cool" and " The Trumpets They Play!". He also works in other media including painting, illustration, printmaking, photography, music, and film. Career ''Big Numbers'' At the age of 18 Columbia was hired to assist Bill Sienkiewicz in illustrating Alan Moore's ambitious '' Big Numbers'' series. When Sienkiewicz withdrew from the series in 1990 after the release of the first two issues, Moore and his backers at Tundra Publishing asked Columbia to become its sole artist. Doghead (comics)
''Doghead'' is a 48-page graphic novel by Al Columbia. His first solo publication, it was released by Tundra Publishing in 1992 while he was involved with Alan Moore's ill-fated '' Big Numbers'' series. It contains two short stories in black and white (the Pixies-inspired " Broken Face" and "Patio Lanterns") and one ("Poster Child") painted in full color. ''Dogheads reception was lukewarm. A 1995 review by Vincent Aliberti dismissed it as " Dave McKean and Bill Sienkiewicz impersonations, some fine colour work and an occasional exchange of witty dialogue", and Marshall Pryor in ''The Comics Journal'' called it "forgettable, but lovely, work ..most notable for its experimentation with disturbing single images and animation-style movement, strengths of olumbia'slater comics." The Biologic Show
''The Biologic Show'' is a comic book series written and drawn by Al Columbia. The first issue, #0, was released in October 1994 by Fantagraphics Books, and a second issue, #1, was released the following January. A third issue (#2) was announced in the pages of other Fantagraphics publications and solicited in '' Previews'' but was never published. "I Was Killing When Killing Wasn't Cool", a color short story with a markedly different art style originally intended for issue #2, appeared instead in the anthology '' Zero Zero''. In a 2010 interview, Columbia recalled that the unfinished issue "looked so different that it just didn’t look right, it didn’t look consistent, and it didn’t feel right to keep putting out that same comic book, to try to tell a story where the style is mutating." Michael Dalton Allred is an American comic book artist and writer most famous for his independent comics creations, ''Madman'' and ''iZombie''. His style is often compared to pop art, as well as commercial and comic art of the 1950s and 1960s. Early life Allred was raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon his parents' divorce, he was raised with his father in Oregon, while his brothers and mother moved to Utah. Tundra Publishing was a Northampton, Massachusetts-based comic book publisher founded by Kevin Eastman in 1990. The company was founded to provide a venue for adventurous, creator-owned work by talented cartoonists and illustrators. Its publications were noted in the trade for their high production values, including glossy paper stock, full-color printing, and square binding. Tundra was one of the earlier creator-owned companies, before the formation of Image Comics and Dark Horse Comics' Legends imprint. Big Numbers (comics)
''Big Numbers'' is an unfinished graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and artist Bill Sienkiewicz. In 1990 Moore's short-lived imprint Mad Love published two of the planned twelve issues. The series was picked up by Kevin Eastman's Tundra Publishing, but the completed third issue did not print, and the remaining issues, whose artwork was to be handled by Sienkiewicz's assistant Al Columbia, were never finished. The work marks a move, on Moore's part, away from genre fiction, in the wake of the success of ''Watchmen''. Alan Moore
