Al Brown's Tunetoppers
Al Brown's Tunetoppers was a band led by Al Caca, born May 22, 1934, who had success in 1960 with a dance tune " The Madison" on Amy Records. The dance calls were by Cookie Brown. Although they were successful in record sales, it had to fight off a competing version by Ray Bryant on Columbia Records who titled his, "Madison Time" with calls by Eddie Morrison. As a result, Al Brown's version could only peak at #23 on the Billboard Charts. Dickey Doo & The Don'ts also released version of "The Madison" on a United Artists album. Madison (dance)
The Madison is a novelty dance that was popular in the late 1950s to mid-1960s. Description and history It was created and first danced in Columbus, Ohio, in 1957. The local popularity of the dance and record in Baltimore, Maryland, came to the attention of the producers of ''The Buddy Deane Show'' in 1960, which led to other dance shows picking it up. The Madison is a line dance that features a regular back-and-forth pattern interspersed with called steps. Its popularity inspired dance teams and competitions, as well as various recordings, and today it is still sometimes performed as a nostalgic dance. The Madison is featured in the John Waters movie ''Hairspray'' (1988), and it continues to be performed in the Broadway musical ''Hairspray''. Artists who had success on Amy included Al Brown's Tunetoppers with "The Madison" (Amy 804 charted #23), a dance tune in 1960, Joey Powers with "Midnight Mary" (Amy 892 charted #10 in 1964), Del Shannon's 1964 recordings of " Handy Man" (Amy 905 charted #22) and "Keep Searchin'" (Amy 915 charted #9). Ray Bryant
Raphael Homer "Ray" Bryant (December 24, 1931 – June 2, 2011) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. Early life Bryant was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 24, 1931. His mother was an ordained minister who had taught herself to play the piano; his father also played the piano and sang. His brothers were the bass player Tommy, drummer and singer Len, and Lynwood. Ray began playing the piano around the age of six or seven, following the example of his mother and his sister, Vera. Gospel influences in his playing came from being part of the church at this stage in his early life. He had switched from classical music to jazz by his early teens and played the double bass at junior high school. He was first paid to play when he was 12: "I would play for dances, and they'd sneak me into bars. I'd get four or five bucks a night, which was good money then." United Artists Corporation (UA), currently doing business as United Artists Digital Studios, is an American digital production company. Founded in 1919 by D. W. Gerry Granahan
Gerald Granahan (April 20, 1932 – January 10, 2022) was an American singer, songwriter, and record producer, best known for his work in the 1950s and 1960s. Life and career Granahan was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania on April 20, 1932. He worked at WPTS as a radio announcer and disc jockey in his youth. His Elvis Presley-like voice got him a job recording demos of songs submitted to Presley. Granahan was offered a contract with Atlantic Records in 1957 as a rockabilly artist under the name Jerry Grant, but his first record release sank without a trace, and another release shortly after on Mark Records was also a flop. In 1958, Granahan teamed with publisher Tommy Volando on Sunbeam Records, and recorded the single "No Chemise Please".
