Al-Adhamiya Sport Club ( ar, نادي الأعظمية الرياضي) is an Iraqi sports club based in Al-Adhamiyah, Baghdad, whose football team plays in Iraq Division Two. History Early years Al-Adhamiya was founded in 1951 and competed in the Iraq Central FA League from 1957–58 until 1959–60 when they were relegated. Al-Jumhouriya Al-Olympi In 1967, Al-Adhamiya merged with Al-Jumhouriya Al-Olympi to form Markaz Al-Shabab Al-Adhamiya. Al-Jumhouriya Al-Olympi were a club founded in 1934 as Al-Olympi Al-Malaki, later renaming to Al-Malaki in 1943, Al-Jumhouriya in 1958 and Al-Jumhouriya Al-Olympi in 1959. Under the name Al-Malaki, the club had competed in the first edition of the Iraq Central FA League and the first edition of the Iraq FA Cup. Iraqi Premier League
The Iraqi Premier League ( ar, الدوري العراقي الممتاز) is the top level of the Iraqi football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA) and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Iraq Division One. The league was formed by the IFA in 1974 as the Iraqi National Clubs First Division, the first nationwide league of clubs in Iraq. The current format sees 20 teams playing 38 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away), totalling 380 matches in the season. Of the 80 teams to have competed since the inception of the league in 1974, eleven have won the title. Al-Zawraa are the most successful club with 14 titles, followed by Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Talaba and Al-Shorta, who together contest the Baghdad derbies. Jamil Abbas
Jamil Abbas ( ar, جميل عباس; 1 January 1927 – 7 July 2005) was one of the longest serving national captains of Iraq. He was part of the Iraqi national team for over 15 years. The defender was captain of Iraq, as well as the Olympic and Army teams from 1954 to 1966; a record. Abbas was known to millions of Iraqis by the nickname Jamoli. Born in 1927 in Baghdad, the left full back turned centre half played for Nadi Al-Olympia Al-Maliki (Royal Olympic Club) in Adhammiya from 1945. He went onto join one of Iraq's top sides of the 40s and 50s, Haris Al-Maliki (Royal Guards). Abbas continued to play for the team until 1957, when he joined the newly formed Farqa Al-Thalatha (Third Armoured Division). Iraq Division One
The Iraq Division One is the second-highest division of the Iraqi football league system after the Premier League. The league is contested by 24 clubs. It is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA). Each season, the two top-finishing teams in the Division One are automatically promoted to the Premier League. The four lowest-finishing teams in the Division One are relegated to Division Two. The number of clubs in the league have changed throughout history, most recently in the 2021–22 season when the number of clubs decreased from 28 to 24. 1980–81 Iraqi National League
The 1980–81 Iraqi National Clubs First Division was the 7th season of the competition since its foundation in 1974. The competition was originally meant to be held in a double round-robin format, but was later changed to a single round-robin tournament due to the Iran–Iraq War. Al-Talaba won the league title for the first time in their history. Holders Al-Shorta defeated Al-Zawraa 3–0 on the final day of the season on 19 May to move on equal points and equal goal difference with Al-Talaba. Although Al-Shorta had scored two more goals than Al-Talaba, the Iraq Football Association decided that teams who were equal on points and goal difference would be separated by number of wins and therefore Al-Talaba were crowned champions. 1948–49 Iraq FA Cup
The 1948–49 Iraq Football Association Cup was the first edition of what is now the Iraq FA Cup. Clubs and institute-representative teams participated in the tournament, which was won by Sharikat Naft Al-Basra, beating Al-Kuliya Al-Askariya Al-Malakiya 2–1 in Iraq's first ever national cup final, played at Al-Kashafa Stadium in Baghdad on 7 April 1949. The winning team's players and staff paraded the trophy around Basra upon returning from Baghdad three days after winning the tournament. 1948–49 Iraq FA Baghdad First Division
The 1948–49 Iraq FA Baghdad First Division was the first season of the Iraq Central FA League (the top division of football in Baghdad and its neighbouring cities from 1948 to 1973). The competition started on 5 November 1948, after the fixture list had been drawn up at a meeting between club representatives held at the Al-Maliki club. The Iraq Central Football Association (IFA) intended to hold the league in a double round-robin format, but this was changed to a single round-robin after several games had to be postponed due to rainy weather. The IFA also set a rule that players who had already played for one club in a league game could not play for another team without prior permission from the League Committee, however Montakhab Al-Shorta and Wizarat Al-Maarif were found to have broken this rule.
