Akron Zips Men's Soccer
The Akron Zips men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of the University of Akron. The team is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Mid-American Conference through the 2022 season, after which it will join the Big East Conference as a single-sport member. Akron is regularly ranked in the Top 10 NSCAA collegiate men's soccer poll. They have been ranked No. 1 previously in 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2016. The Zips have played their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field, formerly named Lee R. Jackson Soccer Field and Cub Cadet Field, since 1966. Charles Guthrie (athletic Director)
Charles Guthrie is the athletic director at the University of Akron. He previously held the same position at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, San Francisco State University, and Clark College. Early life and education Guthrie grew up in Albany, New York. He played basketball at Onondaga Community College before transferring and earning a B.A. s from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in education administration and policy studies from the University at Albany. Career Guthrie began his career in 1998 as an intern at Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In 2004, he completed the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program. Akron () is the fifth-largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Summit County. Cameron Knowles
Cameron Knowles (born 11 October 1982 in Auckland) is a New Zealand football coach and former player who is currently the head coach of MLS Next Pro side Minnesota United 2. Playing career College and Amateur Knowles played college soccer for the University of Akron, captaining the team his senior year. Knowles anchored an Akron defence that allowed only three goals in league play and recorded 13 shutouts in 2004. Knowles, a two-time All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) first-team selection led Akron to two MAC titles in 2002 and 2004 and helped Akron make four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. Roderick Scott
Roderick Scott (born 27 December 1965) is a Canadian former soccer player and coach. Club career University of Akron Scott attended the University of Akron on a soccer scholarship after a recruiter spotted him playing for the Canadian U-19 national team. He played on the Zips soccer team from 1985 to 1988. In 1986 Akron lost in Duke University in the NCAA championship. His senior season, he was a third team All-American. He graduated in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in business and organizational communications. He was inducted into the Akron Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Shaun Pendleton
Shaun Pendleton, born in Sheffield, England, was an English-American soccer defender who played four seasons in the American Indoor Soccer Association before becoming a college soccer coach. His teams won the 1991 NAIA and 2003 NCAA Division II soccer championships. Player Pendleton grew up in Sheffield, England. In 1982, he entered the University of Akron, playing for the men’s soccer team until 1985. He was a 1984 and 1985 first team All American. He graduated in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. The Zips inducted him into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2004. Benny Dargle
Bernard "Benny" Dargle (born 2 January 1957) is an American retired professional soccer player who played as a defender, making over 400 career appearances in a professional career which lasted from 1978 to 1992. Career Dargle was born in Liverpool, England and played college soccer for the University of Akron from 1975 to 1977. He began his professional career in 1978 with the Cleveland Cobras of the American Soccer League before moving to the Detroit Express of the North American Soccer League in 1979. He played two outdoor seasons and one indoor season with the Express before moving to the Washington Diplomats in 1981. Louis "Louie" Nanchoff (born May 13, 1956 in Resen, Yugoslavia) is a retired U.S.-Yugoslavian soccer player. He spent three seasons in the North American Soccer League and seven seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League. He also earned ten caps, scoring one goal, with the U.S. national team between 1979 and 1980. Youth and college Louis immigrated with his family from North Macedonia, then Yugoslavia, when he was thirteen years old. George Nanchoff (born 1954 in Resen, Yugoslavia ( SR Macedonia)) is a retired Yugoslavian-American soccer player. Conrad Earnest
Conrad Earnest (born December 20, 1957) is a retired American soccer goalkeeper and well respected exercise physiologist. He spent two seasons in the American Soccer League. Career Earnest began playing soccer at the age of 16. Within two years he earned high school All New York State/All-American status. He began playing collegiate soccer at Ulster County Community College winning the Junior College National Championship in his second year. Earnest then attended the University of Akron. During his time at Akron, Earnest was twice awarded NCAA Division I player of the week honors.
