Airolo Railway Station
Airolo railway station ( it, Stazione di Airolo) is a railway station in the Swiss canton of Ticino and municipality of Airolo. The station is on the original line of the Swiss Federal Railways Gotthard railway, at the southern entrance to the Gotthard Tunnel. Most trains on the Gotthard route now use the Gotthard Base Tunnel and do not pass through Airolo station. The station has three platform tracks, served by a side platform and an island platform, connected by a pedestrian subway. The station building, on the side platform, includes a kiosk and a ticket office, but is largely given over to a manufacturer of local yogurts. Just outside the station entrance is a memorial to the lives lost during the construction of the Gotthard Tunnel. Airolo (''Airöö'' in Lombard, in rm, italic=yes, ) is a municipality in the district of Leventina in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. Geography Airolo is located in Leventina valley and the Lepontine Alps, on the southern flank of the St. Gotthard Pass. Both the Gotthard rail tunnel, on the important Gotthard railway linking northern and southern Europe, and the Gotthard road tunnel, on the A2 motorway, have their southern portal in Airolo. It is the largest municipality in the canton of Ticino, and consists of the village of Airolo and the hamlets of Valle, Madrano, Brugnasco, Nante and Fontana. Oberwald .
Oberwald is a village in the municipality of Obergoms in Goms District in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is situated at an elevation of 1,377 m and had a population of 277 in December 2007. It is located at the end of the Goms, directly before the Furka and Grimsel passes, underneath the Rhône River source at the Rhône Glacier. It is also the startpoint of the Furka Tunnel. Most inhabitants live off tourism or sheep farming. Oberwald was an independent municipality until January 1, 2009, when it merged with Ulrichen and Obergesteln to form the municipality of Obergoms Obergoms is the upper part of the Goms and a municipality in the district of Goms in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. Novena Pass
Nufenen Pass (Italian: ''Passo della Novena'', German: ''Nufenenpass'') (el. 2478 m.) is the highest mountain pass with a paved road within Switzerland. It lies between the summits of Pizzo Gallina (north) and the Nufenenstock (south). The pass road from Ulrichen in canton of Valais leads to the Bedretto valley in the canton of Ticino, linking Brig to Airolo. It is not the lowest pass between the two valleys, as it is located one kilometre north of an unnamed slightly lower pass at 2,440 metres (vs 2478 m.), which is traversed by a trail. The road is of relatively recent construction, having been opened to motor vehicle traffic only since September 1969. The source of the Ticino River lies east of the top of the pass. Towards the north are views of the Bernese Alps, including the Finsteraarhorn while there is a view over the Gries Glacier to the south. Gotthard Panorama Express
The Gotthard Panorama Express is a tourist oriented boat and panoramic train line which connects Lucerne to Lugano, crossing the Swiss Alps from North to South through the Gotthard crest tunnel. Until 2017, the train was known as the William Tell Express (german: Wilhelm Tell Express). It is jointly operated by the Swiss Federal Railways, who operate the train, and the Lake Lucerne Navigation Company (german: Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersees; SGV), who operate the boat. Previous iterations of the train ran to a southern terminus at Locarno rather than the current terminus at Lugano.
