Afraid To Fight
''Afraid to Fight'' is a 1922 silent American drama film directed by William Worthington and written by Charles Sarver. The film stars Frank Mayo, Lillian Rich, Peggy Cartwright, Lydia Knott, W.S. McDunnough, and Tom McGuire. The film was released on July 24, 1922, by Universal Film Manufacturing Company. Plot As described in a film magazine, Tom Harper (Mayo) is a former American Expeditionary Forces soldier, handy with his fists, but suffering the effects of being gassed during World War I. His crippled little sister Sally (Cartwright), he learns, can be cured of her invalidism if placed in the care of a specialist. As Tom is out of a job, Sally prays that Congress will pass the law and send him his bonus. A fight manager picks Tom up and sends him to the mountains for a rest cure on the condition that he will fight the boxing champion when he is well. William Worthington (actor)
William Worthington (April 8, 1872 in Troy, New York – April 9, 1941 in Beverly Hills, California) was an American silent film actor and director. Career Worthington became interested in the performing arts when he began his career as an opera singer and stage actor. He entered films with a lead role in 1913, and one of his more notable films was Damon and Pythias in 1914. From 1917 to 1925, William concentrated on directing films and was the head of a film production firm called Multicolor, which was bought by Cinecolor in 1932. He was active in films up until his death in 1941. Rest Cure
Bed rest, also referred to as the rest-cure, is a medical treatment in which a person lies in bed for most of the time to try to cure an illness. Bed rest refers to voluntarily lying in bed as a treatment and not being confined to bed because of a health impairment which physically prevents leaving bed. The practice is still used although a 1999 systematic review found no benefits for any of the 17 conditions studied and no proven benefit for any conditions at all, beyond that imposed by symptoms. Thomas Aloyisus Kennedy (July 15, 1885 – October 6, 1965) was an American actor known for his roles in Hollywood comedies from the silent days, with such producers as Mack Sennett and Hal Roach, mainly supporting lead comedians such as the Marx Brothers, W. C. Fields, Mabel Normand, Shemp Howard, Laurel and Hardy, and the Three Stooges. Kennedy also played dramatic roles as a supporting actor. Al Kaufman (6 January 1886 – 7 April 1957) was an American boxer and film actor. Biography Kaufman, born on September 25, 1888 in North Dakota, was a heavyweight boxer and one of the " White Hopes" of the era when Jack Johnson, an African American, was the world heavyweight champion. The 6′1″ Kaufman, a German-American, fought out of his hometown of San Francisco, California at a weight of between 185 and 205 lbs. in a career that stretched from 1905 to 1915. He was a muscular boxer, who fought cautiously but who could punch hard. Kaufman fought Johnson for the world heavyweight title. Before that bout, Johnson had attended a match between Kaufman and Tony Ross held at the Fairmont Athletic Club in The Bronx on April 13, 1909.
