Afghan Film Festival In Australia
The Afghan film festival in Australia was established in 2019 as an annual showcase of Afghan cinema in Australia. It takes place in Canberra and is jointly hosted by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the ANU Film Group, at the Australian National University. 2019 First Afghan Film Festival The inaugural Afghan film festival took place between the 15th and 21 November 2019 and was held at the ANU Kambri Precinct Cultural Centre. The festival was opened by Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Australia, Wahidullah Waissi. The Afghan Embassy’s co-hosting of the event was part of its commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of Afghan independence, and concurrently the 50th anniversary of official diplomatic relations with Australia. Afghan Film
Afghan Film also known as Afghan Film Organization (AFO) is Afghanistan's state-run film company, established in 1968. The current president is Sahraa Karimi, who attained a PhD in Cinema from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and is its first female president. It is also a film archive. Many of its contents were destroyed by the Taliban, although some staff members saved valuable films risking their own lives. A number of rescue and archival efforts were chronicled in the 2015 documentary '' A Flickering Truth''. An eight-day film festival was launched on August 3, 2019, showcasing 100 films around different cinemas in the country in celebration of the country's 100th anniversary of independence. ''Osama'' ( prs, اُسامه, Osamah) is a 2003 drama film made in Afghanistan by Siddiq Barmak. The film follows a preteen girl living in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime who disguises herself as a boy, Osama, to support her family. It was the first film to be shot entirely in Afghanistan since 1996, when the Taliban regime banned the creation of all films. The film is an international co-production between companies in Afghanistan, the Netherlands, Japan, Ireland, and Iran. Etymology Although the title of the film highlights an allegorical relevance to Osama bin Laden, there is no further similarity. ''Jirga'' (, meaning "meeting") is a 2018 Australian drama film written and directed by Benjamin Gilmour and produced by John Maynard. It stars Sam Smith as a former Australian soldier returning to Afghanistan to seek forgiveness from the family of a man he killed while serving in the war. The film was shot under extreme circumstances, in dangerous locations and with assistance from the local people of Afghanistan. Deemed too politically divisive to be produced in Pakistan the film moved production at the last minute to Afghanistan and shot in one of the most dangerous regions in the world, Kandahar Province. Gilmour sought to create a film which showed the beauty of the Afghan country and people as well as highlight the detrimental impact of the War in Afghanistan on Western and Afghan people. Atiq Rahimi ( fa, عتیق رحیمی) (born 26 February 1962 in Kabul) is a French-Afghan writer and filmmaker. Life Atiq Rahimi was born in 1962 in Kabul to a senior public servant and attended high school in Lycée Esteqlal. Following the Soviet invasion, Rahimi fled Afghanistan, taking refuge in Pakistan for a year and then relocating to France in 1985 after receiving political asylum. On completion of his studies at the Sorbonne, Rahimi joined a Paris-based production company where he produced seven documentaries for French television, as well as several commercials. Taking time off in the late 1990s, Rahimi embarked on his first writing project. His 2000 Dari/Persian book, ''Earth and Ashes'', was an instant bestseller in Europe and South America. Written by Jean-Claude Carrière and the director, the film stars Golshifteh Farahani, Hamid Djavadan, Massi Mrowat, and Hassina Burgan. The film was selected as the Afghan entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, although it was not nominated.
