Adyar or Adyal is a village of Pauni Taluka in Bhandara district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is connected with National Highway NH 247. Adyar is a large neighbourhood in south Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is located on the southern banks of the Adyar River. The Battle of Adyar (also the Battle of Adyar River) took place on 24 October 1746. The battle was between the French East India Company men and Nawab of Arcot forces over the St. George Fort, which was held by the French. It was part of the First Carnatic War between the English and the French. Background The French captured Fort St. George from the British East Indian Company. Nawab of Arcot, a close ally of the British, set out to regain it by sending troops, led by his son Mahfuz Khan, to Madras. While leading an army of 10,000, he was dispersed by French forces, forcing him to move south. Khan seized San Thomé and formed a battle line on the north bank of the Adyar River on 22 October to prevent the French from moving up reinforcements from Pondicherry. Adyar Eco Park
Tholkappia Poonga or Adyar Eco Park (also known as Adyar Poonga) is an ecological park set up by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the Adyar estuary area of Chennai, India. According to the government, the project, conceived based on the master plan for the restoration of the vegetation of the freshwater ecosystems of the Coromandel Coast, especially the fragile ecosystem of the Adyar estuary and creek, was expected to cost around 1,000 million which will include the beautification of of land. The park's ecosystem consists of tropical dense evergreen forest, predominantly comprising trees and shrubs that have thick dark green foliage throughout the year, with over 160 woody species, and comprises six vegetative elements such as trees, shrubs, lianas, epiphytes, herbs and tuberous species. The Crowne Plaza Chennai Adyar Park was a five-star hotel located on TTK Road in Chennai, India. It opened in 1981 and closed in 2023. History The 250-room Holiday Inn Adayar Gate opened in 1981 on the site of the gates to an old "garden house". It was built by Adyar Gate Hotels Limited (AGHL), established in 1970 by T. T. Vasu (one of the owners of the T. T. Krishnamachari Group, aka TTK) and K. R. Veerappan. Later renamed the Holiday Inn Madras, the hotel was taken over by Welcomgroup Hotels in February 1985, when the controlling stake in the company was acquired by the Goyal family for 30 million. The hotel was soon after renamed the Welcomgroup Adayar Park Hotel. In 1988, Sheraton Hotels was contracted to manage the hotel, renamed the Welcomgroup Park Sheraton Hotel & Towers. The Theosophy Society was founded by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and others in 1875. The designation 'Adyar' is sometimes added to the name to make it clear that this is the Theosophical Society headquartered there, after the American section and some other lodges separated from it in 1895, under William Quan Judge. In 1882, its headquarters moved with Blavatsky and president Henry Steel Olcott from New York to Adyar, an area of Chennai, India. The US National Section of this organization is called the Theosophical Society in America located in Wheaton, Illinois. Founders H. P.
