Adrienne De Villeneuve-Bargemont
Adrienne de Villeneuve-Bargemont, comtesse de Montebello (1826-1870), was a French courtier. She served as lady-in-waiting (''dame de Palais'') to the empress of France, Eugénie de Montijo. Life She was the daughter of Jean-Paul-Alban Villeneuve-Barcement and Emma de Carbonnel de Canisy, and married to Gustave Olivier Lannes de Montebello in 1846. After the introduction of the Second Empire and the marriage of Emperor Napoleon III to Eugénie de Montijo, she was appointed to the Household of the new Empress. Franz Xaver Winterhalter (20 April 1805 – 8 July 1873) was a German painter and lithographer, known for his flattering portraits of royalty and upper-class society in the mid-19th century. His name has become associated with fashionable court portraiture. ''Empress Eugénie Surrounded by her Ladies in Waiting'' is an oil on canvas painting by the German artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter completed in 1855. It features depictions of the empress of France, Eugénie de Montijo, and eight of her ladies-in-waiting. The painting was displayed at the Palace of Fontainebleau during the regime of Eugénie's husband, Napoleon III. After Eugénie's exile to England, the painting was given to her, and later displayed in the entrance to her house at Farnborough Hill. It is currently on display at Château de Compiègne. History The painting was commissioned by Empress Eugénie de Montijo to be exhibited at the painting salon of the Exposition Universelle, which opened in May. The Second French Empire (; officially the French Empire, ), was the 18-year Empire, Imperial Bonapartist regime of Napoleon III from 14 January 1852 to 27 October 1870, between the French Second Republic, Second and the French Third Republic, Third Republic of France.
