''Adoration of the Shepherds'' is a c. 1540 oil on canvas painting by Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo, now in the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia. It was one of the painter's last works and he also produced variants on it, including one in San Giobbe in Venice. Description and style The painting is part of the painter's last phase, characterized by intense and sometimes dark shades and by a use of pasty color, capable of giving particular effects that simulate velvet. The scene of the adoration of the Child is set in front of the hut, in which the ox and the donkey protrude from the half-light. Further behind, from a small window, two shepherds lean to assist and a third is leaning against a wall on the right. Their description, with lively everyday accents, follows a Flemish tradition (used for example by Bosch, which the artist had admired in Venice). Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo
Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo, also called Girolamo da Brescia (c. 1480–1485 – after 1548), was an Italian High Renaissance painter active mostly in Venice, although he also worked in other cities in northern Italy. He is noted for his subtle use of color and chiaroscuro, and for the sober realism of his works, which are mostly religious subjects, with a few portraits. His portraits are given interest by their accessories or settings; "some even look like extracts from larger narratives". About 40 paintings by Savoldo are known in all, six of them portraits; only a handful of drawings by him are known. He was highly regarded in his own lifetime; several repetitions of works were commissioned from him, and copies of his work made by others. The Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo is a public art museum in Brescia, Lombardy. Established in 1851, the museum exhibits mainly paintings by local artists dated from the Thirteenth through the Eighteenth century. The term comes from the Latin ''adōrātiō'', meaning "to give homage or worship to someone or something".
