Administrative Divisions Of Abkhazia
In Soviet times, the Abkhazian ASSR was divided into six ''raions'' (districts) named after their respective capitals. The administrative divisions of the disputed Republic of Abkhazia have stayed the same, with one exception: in 1995 the Tkvarcheli District was created around the town of Tkvarcheli from parts of the Ochamchira and Gali raions. The Georgian government, which claims Abkhazia as an Autonomous region but lacks control, has not changed the Soviet divisions. Districts of Abkhazia Districts are led by the Head of the Administration, who is simultaneously Mayor of the District's capital, except in the case of Sukhumi. The Head of the Administration is appointed by the President following consultations with the District Assembly. Lesser Abkhazia (Georgian: ჯიქეთი, Jiqeti) was the term used to refer to those lands of Abkhazia that were not subject to the direct control of the ruling Shervashidze dynasty. History After the Russian-Circassian War, the bulk of the mountaineers relocated to the Ottoman Empire, while the depopulated coastline was gradually colonized by Christian settlers of various ethnicity. Sadzen was an ill-defined region on the eastern shore of the Black Sea which used to be settled by the Sadz people, hence the name. Leselidze (town)
Leselidze ( ka, ლესელიძე, ; hy, Լեսելիձե; russian: Леселидзе) or Gyachrypsh ( ab, Гьачрыҧшь, ''G'achryphsh''; russian: Гячрыпш) is a town in Abkhazia. Formerly named Yermolovsk, the town is located on the shores of the Black Sea and is 14 kilometers from the city of Gagra. History The town was founded in the 19th century as the settlement Yermolovsk (russian: Ермоловск), named in honor of the Minister of Agriculture A.S. Yermolov who traveled to this place in 1894. Some authors linked the name of the settlement to General Yermolov (commander of the Caucasian war), but this presumption is apparently erroneous. Gulripshi ( ab, Гәылрыҧшь, ''Gwylryphsh''; ka, გულრიფში, ; russian: Гульрыпш, ''Gulrypsh'') is an urban settlement in Abkhazia. Bzyb (village)
Bzyb ( ab, Бзыԥ, ''Bzyph'', ka, ბზიფი, ''Bzipi'', russian: Бзыбь or Бзыпта) is an urban-type settlement located in the Gagra District of Abkhazia, Georgia. Next to the river Bzyb. There is a 9th-10th-century church, now in ruins and a medieval fortress nearby. The town became less important when the fortress was destroyed and the town passed into the control of the clan of Inal-Ipa, which perhaps branched off around 1730 from Abkhazia's princely house, the Shervashidze.
