Ackerman Island (3885479573)
Ackerman Island was a sandbar island located in the Arkansas River in downtown Wichita, Kansas, United States. It was located on the north side of the Douglas Street Bridge. History The sandbar started to form in the 1870s, supposedly due to a drop in the water level of the Arkansas River. Joseph Ackerman, a local businessman, acquired the island in 1890. In 1905, he sold the island, then the Wonderland Park (aka Wonderland Amusement Park) was built and remained open until 1918. In 1912, the Island Park baseball stadium was built on the island. Baseball was played at that stadium from 1912 until it was torn down in 1933. In 1925, at this stadium, a Ku Klux Klan team played baseball against a Negro league baseball team named the Wichita Monrovians. The Monrovians won 10–8. Proceeds were donated to charity. Arkansas River

Negro League Baseball
The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams of African Americans and, to a lesser extent, Latin Americans. The term may be used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and it may be used narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues beginning in 1920 that are sometimes termed "Negro Major Leagues". Wichita Monrovians
The Wichita Monrovians were a Negro league baseball team in the 1920s. The team beat the KKK in a baseball match in 1925. They were formerly known as the Black Wonders and were later incorporated as the Monrovian Corporation. They were named after the Liberian capital Monrovia. They apparently won 44 games out of 52 in 1925. The Game against the KKK On June 21st 1925 the KKK wanted to improve their image so decided to have a match against a Negro league baseball team. The Works Progress Administration (WPA; renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. Lawrence–Dumont Stadium, previously known as Lawrence Stadium, was a baseball stadium in Wichita, Kansas, United States. It was located on the northwest corner of McLean Boulevard and Maple Street, along the west bank of the Arkansas River, in the Delano neighborhood of downtown Wichita. Joyland Amusement Park was an amusement park in Wichita, Kansas, United States. It was in continuous operation for 55 years, from June 12, 1949 to 2004, closing permanently in 2006. It was once the largest theme park in central Kansas and featured a wooden roller coaster and 15 other rides. History 20th century The park was founded by Lester Ottaway and his sons Herbert and Harold to serve as the home for a miniature gauge steam locomotive that Herb Ottaway had purchased in Fort Scott, back in 1933. The train had been part of a defunct amusement park there and was originally built by the Miniature Railway Company of Elgin, Illinois, between 1905 and 1910. By 1934, Herb Ottaway, who worked as a race car builder, had fully refurbished and restored the steam locomotive and cars and began transporting the miniature train to county fairs in western Kansas and eastern Colorado.
