Acarology Society Of America
Acarology (from Ancient Greek /, , a type of mite; and , ) is the study of mites and ticks, the animals in the order Acarina. It is a subfield of arachnology, a subdiscipline of the field of zoology. A zoologist specializing in acarology is called an acarologist. Acarologists may also be parasitologists because many members of Acarina are parasitic. Many acarologists are studying around the world both professionally and as amateurs. The discipline is a developing science and long-awaited research has been provided for it in more recent history. Aleksei Zachvatkin
Aleksei Alekseevich Zachvatkin (Алексея Алексеевича Захваткина) (until 1931 with the surname Jasykov or Yazykov) (1 December 1905 - 14 December 1950) was a Russian entomologist and acarologist who worked on leafhoppers and mites. Aleksei was born in a Russian noble family in Ekaterinburg and grew up in Montreux, Switzerland, educated by private tutors. The family moved to Moscow just before World War I and he went to study at the State University of Moscow. An interest in natural history led to work at the university herbarium and then at the zoological museum. He took an interest in the cicadas but the October revolution of 1917 and his wealthy background meant that he could not join university. He however attended some classes informally and studied painting. In 1926 he joined the Central Asian Institute of Plant Protection as an assistant and travelled on several expeditions. Ronald Vernon Southcott
Ronald Vernon Southcott (15 May 1918 in Adelaide – 9 April 1998) was an Australian medical zoologist specializing in Acari, mites and ticks. Biography After finishing school at St Peter's College, Adelaide Southcott started working on mites, or the acari, at the age of 16 with Herbert Womersley the acarologist at the South Australian Museum. Womersley described and named the trombidiid mite, which Southcott had collected on a cycling trip in the hills near Adelaide in 1934, ''Microtrombidium southcotti'', after Southcott. Southcott considered that act by Herb Womersley, "hooked me on mites". Southcott studied medicine at the University of Adelaide where he graduated in 1941. Southcott then served in the Australian Army Medical Corps from 1942 to 1946. While he was stationed at Cairns he started working on the taxonomy and medical effects of jellyfish, the subject for which he was later to become famous. Harry Hoogstraal
Harry Hoogstraal (born in Chicago, Illinois, February 24, 1917, died in Cairo, Egypt, on his 69th birthday, February 24, 1986) was an American entomologist and parasitologist. He was described as "the greatest authority on ticks and tickborne diseases who ever lived." The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene's ''Harry Hoogstraal Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Entomology'' honors his contributions to science. Life and work Hoogstraal earned B.A. and M.S. degrees (1938 and 1942) from the University of Illinois at Chicago, before his training was interrupted by World War II to serve as an officer entomologist (1943–1946) in the United States Army. Natalia Aleksandrovna Filippova (russian: Наталия Александровна Филиппова; 15 February 19305 January 2018) was a world authority on the taxonomy of mites and especially ticks. Her monographs on the identification, morphology, development, distribution and behaviour of the family Argasidae (soft ticks) and the sub-families of Ixodinae and Amblyomminae (hard ticks) are standard works on these important vectors of disease.
