She (1935 Film)
''She'' is a 1935 American film produced by Merian C. Cooper. Based on the 1887 novel of the same name by H. Rider Haggard, the screenplay draws on all the books in the series: the first aforementioned book, ''She and Allan'', '' The Return of She'' and ''Wisdom's Daughter''. The ancient civilization of Kor is depicted in an Art Deco style with imaginative special effects. The setting is Arctic Siberia, rather than Africa, as in the first book. With music by Max Steiner, the film stars Helen Gahagan, Randolph Scott and Nigel Bruce. It was hoped that ''She'' would follow Cooper's previous success, ''King Kong''. Cooper had originally intended to shoot the film in color, but budget cuts by RKO forced him to shoot the film in black and white at the last minute. John Thomas Haskell (April 30, 1919 – September 26, 1998) was an American singer and announcer in the era of old-time radio and later in television. Seymour Felix (October 23, 1892 – March 16, 1961) was an American director, performer, and choreographer best known for his work in early Broadway musicals. Seymour was born on October 23, 1892 in New York City. He began his show business career as a professional dancer in vaudeville at the age of 15. In the 1920s he became a dance director in New York, creating and staging dance numbers for such shows as '' Hit the Deck'' (1927), ''Whoopee!'' (1928), and '' Rosalie'' (1928). "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody" is a popular song written by Irving Berlin in 1919 which became the theme song of the ''Ziegfeld Follies''. The first verse and refrain are considered part of the Great American Songbook and are often covered as a jazz standard. 9th Academy Awards
The 9th Academy Awards were held on March 4, 1937, at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, California to honor films released in 1936. They were hosted by George Jessel, with music by the Victor Young Orchestra, with Spike Jones on drums. This year marked the introduction of the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories, and was the first year that the awards for directing and acting were fixed at five nominees per category. ''My Man Godfrey'' became the first film to receive nominations in all four acting categories, but did not win in any category.
