About Time (New York Gong Album)
''About Time'' is a 1980 album by Daevid Allen and Gong offshoot New York Gong. The basic line-up of New York Gong would continue without Allen as Material. "Much Too Old" / "I Am A Freud" was issued as a 7" single in 1979 (Charly, CYS 1056), and "Jungle Windo(w)" / "Much Too Old" / "Materialism" as a 10" EP in 1980. Allen also released the 1982 album ''Divided Alien Playbax 80'' which featured tracks recorded during these sessions. A further album, ''Daevid Allen and the Divided Alien Clockwork Band'' was released in 1997 (Blueprint, BP 269) of a live performance from the Squat Theatre, New York, August 1980, which featured tape loops from the ''Divided Alien Playbax 80'' album. The Daevid Allen 1983 ''Alien in New York'' EP (Charly Records, CYZ 10) featured two tracks which were also based on tape loops from these sessions. Daevid Allen
Christopher David Allen (13 January 1938 – 13 March 2015), known professionally as Daevid Allen, sometimes credited as Divided Alien, was an Australian musician. He was co-founder of the psychedelic rock groups Soft Machine (in the UK, 1966) and Gong (in France, 1967).McFarlane, 1999, Biography Early years In 1960, inspired by the Beat Generation writers he had discovered while working in a Melbourne bookshop, Allen travelled to Paris, where he stayed at the Beat Hotel, moving into a room recently vacated by Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky. Gary Windo
Gary Windo (7 November 1941, in Brighton, England – 25 July 1992, in New York City) was an English jazz tenor saxophonist. Career Windo came from a musical family in England. By age six he took up drums and accordion, then guitar at twelve and saxophone at seventeen. He lived in the United States during the 1960s but returned to England in 1969. In the early 1970s, his career grew as he founded the Gary Windo Quartet and worked with Carla Bley, Brotherhood of Breath, Centipede, Matching Mole, The Running Man, and Nick Mason. Sonny Stitt heard Windo play at the Berlin Jazz Festival and asked him to join the band, which he declined. He worked outside jazz, with the Psychedelic Furs, Robert Wyatt, NRBQ, and for the comedy television show ''Saturday Night Live''. He taught music lessons with his friend Eric Peralli. Fred Maher
Frederick J. Maher is an American drummer, music programmer and record producer. He was a member of the bands Massacre (1980–81), the Dance, Material, Scritti Politti, and has recorded and toured with Lou Reed. In 1984 he released ''Basic'', an instrumental collaboration album with ex- Voidoids guitarist Robert Quine. Maher's credits as a producer include Lou Reed's ''New York'' (1989), Trip Shakespeare's ''Across the Universe'' (1990), Matthew Sweet's ''Girlfriend'' (1991), Information Society's self-titled album (1988, which achieved platinum sales status), their 1990 album ''Hack'', and a track on 1997's '' Don't Be Afraid''. William Otis Laswell (born February 12, 1955) is an American bass guitarist, record producer, and record label owner. He has been involved in thousands of recordings with many collaborators from all over the world. His music draws from funk, world music, jazz, dub, and ambient styles. According to music critic Chris Brazier, "Laswell's pet concept is 'collision music' which involves bringing together musicians from wildly divergent but complementary spheres and seeing what comes out." The credo of one record label run by Laswell which typifies much of his work is "Nothing Is True, Everything Is Permitted". Although his bands may be credited under the same name and often feature the same roster of musicians, the styles and themes explored on different albums can vary dramatically. Michael Beinhorn is a North American record producer, composer, author and musician. He has produced albums for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Hole, Violent Femmes and Marilyn Manson. Career 1977-1983: Early Years, Material, Herbie Hancock Beinhorn began his career as a Synthesist. ''Temporary Music'' is the 1979 debut EP and 1981 debut album by the New York based no wave music group Material. The band had previously worked with Daevid Allen on New York Gong's 1979 '' About Time'' album. The ''Temporary Music 1'' EP was recorded in 1979 and the ''Temporary Music 2'' EP in 1980. The two EPs were compiled together for Material's debut album, two slightly different versions being released, one on Red Rec. which also included the "Discourse" single, and one on Celluloid which simply put each EP on either side of the album.
