Abondance Cheese
Abondance is a semi-hard, fragrant, raw-milk cheese made in the Haute-Savoie department of France. Its name comes from a small commune also called Abondance. A round of Abondance weighs approximately , and its aroma is comparable to Beaufort, another French cheese variety. Abondance is made exclusively from milk produced by the Abondance, montbéliarde, and tarine breeds of cattle. By 2022, the herd producing the milk for Abondance cheese will need to be a minimum of 55 percent of the herd. In 1998, 873 tonnes were produced (+16.4 percent since 1996), 34 percent from local farms. Abondance cheese was granted an Appellation d'origine contrôlée or AOC in 1990. Abondance (cattle)
The Abondance is a cross breed of cattle which originated in the high valleys of Haute-Savoie, France. Description They are medium-sized, with the female weighing in at between 580 and 680 kilograms (kg) and standing 1.30 metres tall. They are golden brown in color with a white head (apart from the eyes), underside of the abdomen, and extremities of its legs. The bull weighs in at between 645 and 820 kilograms (kg) and stands 1.70 metres tall. Their colour is different, with a chestnut red and a bit of white on the head. Their milk is rich in both fat and protein, with a good balance between the two. The milk is traditionally used to produce Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) cheese such as the reblochon, abondance, tome des Bauges and the beaufort. Typical milk production is 5700 kg per lactation. Abondance Ski Valley
Abondance Ski Valley is a mid-sized ski area in the Haute-Savoie region of France, near Châtel and La Chapelle d'Abondance. The resort has been open since at least 1964 and was closed in 2007, when the local council voted to shut down the area after 15 years of loss-making. The resort was reopened, however, in 2009 when Gregory Lynn Sherwood, an American entrepreneur, made a deal with the local mayor to operate the ski area for the next 12 years. Location Abondance Ski Valley is located in the Abondance Valley, in the Chablais Alps. The resort is one of 12 ski stations in the Portes du Soleil linked ski area, and is open to Portes du Soleil combined ticket holders, however it is not linked to any other resorts and a drive to La Chapelle d'Abondance or Châtel is required in order to access the rest of the Portes du Soleil. Abondance (1780 Ship)
''Abondance'' was a French ''Baleine''-class gabare (cargo ship) launched in 1780. The Royal Navy captured her on 11 December 1781 and took her into service as a troop transport and store ship under the name HMS ''Abondance''. After the end of the war with France the Admiralty sold her in 1784. She then became a merchantman. Career ''Abondance'' was launched at Le Havre in September 1780. She sailed on 11 December 1781 for the Antilles in a convoy under the command of Admiral de Guichen. She was under the command of a M. Dupuis and was carrying 248 soldiers and ordnance, stores, and provisions.
