Abbey Line
The Abbey Line, also called the St Albans Abbey branch line, is a railway line from Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey. The route passes through town and countryside in the county of Hertfordshire, just outside the boundaries of the Oyster Card and London fare zones. Its northern terminus in St Albans Abbey is located in the south of the city, around away from the larger St Albans City railway station on the Midland Main Line. The Abbey line is a semi-rural line and, due to its single-track operation, service frequencies are limited. The service is sometimes referred to locally as ''the Abbey Flyer''. London Midland was a train operating company in England which operated the West Midlands franchise between 11 November 2007 and 10 December 2017. It was owned by the British transport group Govia. London Midland was created as a result of Govia being awarded the West Midlands franchise on 22 June 2007. Midland Main Line
The Midland Main Line is a major railway line in England from London to Nottingham and Sheffield in the Midlands. It comprises the lines from London's St Pancras station via Leicester, Derby/Nottingham and Chesterfield in the East Midlands. Express passenger services on the line are operated by East Midlands Railway. The line is electrified between St Pancras and Corby and the section south of Bedford forms the northern half of the Thameslink network, with a semi-fast service to Brighton and other suburban services. How Wood (Hertfordshire) Railway Station
How Wood railway station is in the village of How Wood, Hertfordshire, England. It is the fourth station on the Abbey Line, from Watford Junction. Like all the other stations on the branch (except Watford Junction), it is a simple unstaffed halt. It was opened by British Rail in October 1988 to coincide with the overhead electrification of the line. Service There is a service every 45 minutes in either direction Monday to Saturday, with hourly service on Sundays. It takes 16 minutes to travel between Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey. Future In November 2007 responsibility for the branch line, including How Wood, passed from Silverlink trains to Govia London Midland trains. Garston railway station serves the Garston area of Watford in Hertfordshire, England. It is the third station on the Abbey Line after Watford Junction and Watford North. The station and all trains serving it are operated by London Northwestern Railway. Like all the other stations on the branch, Garston is an unstaffed railway halt. At opening by British Rail in 1966 it was a welcome addition to a branch which was otherwise being heavily rationalised. History The station was opened by the Mayor of Watford on 7 February 1966. The Midland Railway (MR) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1844. The Midland was one of the largest railway companies in Britain in the early 20th century, and the largest employer in Derby, where it had its headquarters. It amalgamated with several other railways to create the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at grouping in 1922.
