''A Youth with a Jug'' is a 1633 oil painting by Judith Leyster currently in a private collection. Provenance This painting was first documented as being in the collection of Arthur Kay who published his "Treasure Trove of Art" in 1939, including this ''Youth with a Jug'' as one of a series on the five senses painted by Judith Leyster.D.P. Weller, ''Jan Miense Molenaer. Painter of the Dutch Golden Age'', exhibition catalogue, North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh 2002 Later the five paintings were documented as being in the collection of Paris gallery owner Georges Wildenstein, Buenos Aires by 1941. By the 1950s the paintings were split up on the art market and this one was attributed to Leyster by the researcher Frima Fox Hofrichter in 1991 when it was sold to the present owner. In 2002 three of the paintings were brought back together and attributed to Leyster's husband Jan Miense Molenaer. Judith Leyster
Judith Jans Leyster (also Leijster; baptised July 28, 1609Molenaer, JudithNational Gallery of Art website. Accessed February 1, 2014. – February 10, 1660) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of genre works, portraits, and still lifes. Her work was highly regarded by her contemporaries, but largely forgotten after her death. Her List of paintings by Judith Leyster, entire ''oeuvre'' came to be attributed to Frans Hals or to her husband, Jan Miense Molenaer. In 1893, she was rediscovered and scholars began to attribute her works properly. Biography Leyster was born in Haarlem to a local brewer. She was the eighth child of Jan Willemsz Leyster. While the details of her training are uncertain, she was mentioned by contemporary Haarlem poet Samuel Ampzing in his book ''Beschrijvinge ende lof der stadt Haerlem'' (1628). Georges Wildenstein
Georges Wildenstein (16 March 1892 – 11 June 1963) was a French gallery owner, art dealer, art collector, editor and art historian. Life Georges' father was Nathan Wildenstein, who came from a family of Jewish cattle-dealers but had in 1870 left Alsace aged twenty when it was annexed by the German Empire in the Franco-Prussian War and moved to Paris. There he based himself in a tailor's house and served as an intermediary for a client who was selling paintings. In 1905 he set up a gallery on Rue La Boétie, and a stable of racing horses. Georges began work at his father's gallery and became interested in Picasso's paintings and a friend of Monet. Nathan bought Georges a separate business at 21 rue de la Boétie where Georges was a partner of dealer Paul Rosenberg who represented Picasso, and he also opened a gallery on New Bond Street in London. Jan Miense Molenaer
Jan Miense Molenaer (1610 – buried 19 September 1668), was a Dutch Golden Age genre painter whose style was a precursor to Jan Steen's work during Dutch Golden Age painting. He shared a studio with his wife, Judith Leyster, also a genre painter, as well as a portraitist and painter of still-life. Both Molenaer and Leyster may have been pupils of Frans Hals. Biography Molenaer was born and died in Haarlem. He achieved a style close to Hals' early on in his career, but later developed a style like that of Dutch genre painter, Adriaen van Ostade.
