''A Thousand and One Wives'' ( he, אלף נשותיו של נפתלי סימן טוב, tr. ''Elef Neshotav Shel Naftali Siman-Tov'', literally "Naftali Siman-Tov's Thousand Wives") is a 1989 Israeli independent underground dramatic-historical art film written and directed by Michal Bat-Adam. Synopsis In the Bukharim quarter, Jerusalem, during the 1920s, merchant Naftali Siman-Tov () is a wealthy middle-aged widower, all of whose previous wives have died under mysterious circumstances. He fears getting married again due to believing that he is cursed. A local matchmaker, Arotchas (Salim Daw), with the help of some old ladies, pressures him to get married again nonetheless, and, eventually, he marries Flora ( Rita Jahanforuz), a naïve 24-year-old virgin. Michal Bat-Adam
Michal Bat-Adam ( he, מיכל בת-אדם; born March 2, 1945) is an Israeli film director, producer, screenwriter, actress, and musician. Her films deal with complex and conflicted relationships, especially relationships within families. She also explores the line between sanity and mental illness. Many of these movies contain autobiographical elements. As an actress, she has been noted for her work, especially for strong performances in the films of her husband, Moshé Mizrahi. Early life Michal Bat-Adam was born in Afula, Israel to parents Yemima and Adam Rubin, who had immigrated from Warsaw in 1939. While she was a young child, the family lived in Haifa. Yemima suffered from mental illness, and had trouble caring for her family. When Michal was six and a half years old, she was sent to join her older sister Netta at Kibbutz Merhavia in the Harod Valley. Maskit ( he, משכית) is an Israeli fashion house founded in 1954 by Ruth Dayan, the first wife of Moshe Dayan. It was the first fashion house in Israel. Maskit produces textiles, clothing, objets d’art, and jewelry. Etymology The Hebrew word "maskit," meaning an ornament, or something small and beautiful, appears in the Bible 14 times. History In the early years of the state, when the government sought work opportunities for new immigrants to Israel, Ruth Dayan realized that many of them were skilled in decorative arts such as embroidery, rugs, and arts and crafts. The concept of Maskit, which Dayan founded in 1954, was to take modern European patterns and combine them with ethnic embroidery. In 1955, Dayan met fashion designer Finy Leitersdorf, who designed clothes and accessories for Maskit over a period of 15 years.
