''The Millennial Bee'' ( sk, Tisícročná včela, also known in English as ''The Bee Millennium''), is a 1983 film made and produced in Czechoslovakia, West Germany and Austria. The film is based on a novel written by Peter Jaroš and was directed by Juraj Jakubisko. Juraj Jakubisko
Juraj Jakubisko (born 30 April 1938) is a Slovak film director. He has directed fifteen feature films, between 1967 and 2008. He often takes the dual role of cinematographer, and is often also credited as a screenplay writer as he usually co-writes or writes the scripts of his movies. In 2000 he was named Best Slovak Director of the 20th century by film critics and journalists. His work is often described as magical realism. Career Before entering the film industry, Jakubisko taught still photography at a secondary school for applied arts in Bratislava, and worked for a television company in Košice. In 1960 he moved to Prague where he attended the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU), studying film direction under Václav Wasserman. He graduated in 1965 and began working with Alfréd Radok at the Laterna Magika theatre in Prague. 57th Academy Awards
The 57th Academy Awards were presented March 25, 1985, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. Jack Lemmon presided over the ceremonies. This ceremony marked the first time that multiple black nominees would win an Oscar, when Prince and Stevie Wonder won for their respective work on '' Purple Rain'' and '' The Woman in Red''. Additionally, it was the only time that all five nominees in Best Original Song topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. ''Amadeus'' won eight awards, including Best Picture. Czechoslovakia submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film between 1964 and 1991 before splitting into the independent Czech and Slovakia republics in 1993. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Czechoslovak films received six Oscar nominations for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, two of which won the Oscar, namely the Slovak-language ''The Shop on Main Street'' and the Czech-language ''Closely Watched Trains'', both of which are black comedies set during World War II. This is a list of submissions to the 57th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. For the 57th Academy Awards, thirty-two films were submitted in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Thailand submitted a film for the first time.
