A Hoosier Romance
''A Hoosier Romance'' is a 1918 Selig Polyscope silent film, featuring actress Colleen Moore. Plot Pretty Patience Thompson, a "girl with a singing soul," lives with her cold-hearted and avaricious father, Jeff Thompson, on their Indiana farm. Her life of drudgery is brightened by John, the hired hand, but when he asks for her hand in marriage, the old man flies into a rage and discharges him. Soon an aged but wealthy widower courts Patience, and although she still loves John, "Old Jeff" orders her to marry the widower, claiming that a father's will is the law. Aware of her unhappiness, the kindly squire and his wife arrange for John to hide in the Thompson home on the day of the wedding. With all of the guests assembled, Patience runs from the room and pretends to escape on a horse, and while the two old men search the fields for her, she quietly marries John. Harry McCoy
Harry McCoy (December 10, 1893 – September 1, 1937) was an American film actor and screenwriter. He appeared in more than 150 films between 1912 and 1935. Early years McCoy was born on December 10, 1893, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the firstborn of George Washington McCoy and Alberta Keel. His family moved to California in 1910. His had a sister, Alberta. Career McCoy's early experience in entertainment was in vaudeville, where he played a piano and sang. He joined Universal's Joker Comedy brand in 1912, and the following year teamed with Max Asher to form Mike and Jake for Joker. In 1913, he worked at Universal and Keystone at the same time and was one of the original Keystone Cops. At Triangle Keystone, McCoy directed 15 films. Frank Hayes (May 17, 1871 – December 28, 1923) was an American film actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 70 films between 1913 and 1924. An actor with a unique hatchet face appearance he appeared mostly in comedies. His facial appearance naturally lent to comedic effect in silent films — in particular when he would leave out his dentures — but he also showed up in sentimental farces such as ''A Hoosier Romance'' (1918), an early film starring Colleen Moore. In his last appearance, even though brief in the theatrical cut, he played "Old Grannis" in the tragedy ''Greed''. He died in Hollywood, California from pneumonia, aged 52. Eugenie Besserer ( – May 29, 1934) was an American actress who starred in silent films and features of the early sound motion-picture era, beginning in 1910. Her most prominent role is that of the title character's mother in the first talkie film, ''The Jazz Singer''. Early life Born in Marseilles, France, Besserer attended the Convent of Notre Dame in Ottawa, Ontario. She was taken by her parents to Ottawa as a girl, and spent her childhood there. She was left an orphan and escaped from her guardians at the age of 12. She came to New York City and arrived at Grand Central Station with only 25 cents (Canadian currency, equivalent to US$0.34 at the time) in her pocket. Selig Polyscope Company
The Selig Polyscope Company was an American motion picture company that was founded in 1896 by William Selig in Chicago. The company produced hundreds of early, widely distributed commercial moving pictures, including the first films starring Tom Mix, Harold Lloyd, Colleen Moore, and Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. Selig Polyscope also established Southern California's first permanent movie studio, in the historic Edendale district of Los Angeles. Ending film production in 1918, the business, based on its film production animals, became an animal and prop supplier to other studios and a zoo and amusement park attraction in East Los Angeles until the Great Depression in the 1930s. James Colin Campbell (11 October 1859 – 26 August 1928) was a Scottish-born film director, actor and screenwriter. He directed more than 170 films between 1911 and 1924.
