Gift
A gift or present is an item given to someone (who is not already the owner) without the expectation of payment or anything in return. Although gift-giving might involve an expectation of reciprocity, a gift is intended to be free. In many countries, the act of mutually exchanging money, goods, etc., may sustain social relationships and contribute to social cohesion. Economists have elaborated the economics of gift-giving into the notion of a gift economy. By extension, the term ''gift'' can refer to any item or act of service that makes the other happier or less sad, especially as a favor, including forgiveness and kindness. Gifts are often presented on occasions such as birthdays and holidays. History Gift-giving has played a central role in social and economic systems throughout human history. Anthropologist Marcel Mauss argued in '' The Gift'' (1925) that gifts in archaic societies were embedded in systems of obligation, where the act of giving, receiving, and recip ...

Gift (The Autumns EP)
The Autumns were an American indie rock band based in Los Angeles, California, comprising Matthew Kelly (vocals, guitar), Frankie Koroshec (guitar), Dustin Morgan (bass) and Steve Elkins (drums). History Formed by childhood friends Koroshec and Kelly, the band was signed to Risk Records in 1997 and released an EP, '' Suicide at Strell Park'', and album, '' The Angel Pool'', the same year. ''The Angel Pool'' brought the band to the attention of the Cocteau Twins' Simon Raymonde and they decamped to London to record their second album '' In the Russet Gold of This Vain Hour'' with Raymonde at the controls. ''...Russet Gold'' looked set to break the band to a wider audience, drawing interest from MTV and influential Los Angeles based radio station KROQ, but shortly after its release, Risk Records collapsed and the band found themselves without a label. This was not a situation that bothered the group much (indeed Koroshec later stated, "It was for the best. That level of atten ...

Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer
Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) is a tool of assisted reproductive technology against infertility. Eggs are removed from a woman's ovaries, and placed in one of the fallopian tubes, along with the man's sperm. The technique, first attempted by Steptoe and Edwards and later pioneered by endocrinologist Ricardo Asch, allows fertilization to take place inside the woman's uterus. With the advances in IVF the GIFT procedure is used less as pregnancy rates in IVF tend to be equal or better and do not require laparoscopy when the egg is put back. Method It takes, on average, four to six weeks to complete a cycle of GIFT. First, the woman must take a fertility drug to stimulate egg production in the ovaries. The doctor will monitor the growth of the ovarian follicles, and once they are mature, the woman will be injected with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The eggs will be harvested approximately 36 hours later, mixed with the man's sperm, and placed back into the woman's f ...
