A Cuckoo In The Nest (film)
''A Cuckoo in the Nest'' is a 1933 British film, directed by Tom Walls, with a script by Ben Travers. It is a screen adaption of the original 1925 Aldwych farce of the same title. The film was remade in 1954 as '' Fast and Loose''. It was made at Lime Grove Studios. The film's sets were designed by Alfred Junge. Synopsis Peter and Barbara Wyckham plan to travel by railway from London to a country house in Somerset, but Peter misses the train. Another intending traveller in a similar plight is Marguerite Hickett, an old friend of Peter's from the days before their marriages. They decide to hire a motor car and drive to Somerset, but the car breaks down and they seek refuge at the local inn. Tom Walls
Thomas Kirby Walls (18 February 1883 – 27 November 1949) was an English stage and film actor, producer and director, best known for presenting and co-starring in the Aldwych farces in the 1920s and for starring in and directing the film adaptations of those plays in the 1930s. Walls spent his early years as an actor, from 1905, mostly in musical comedy, touring the British provinces, North America and Australia and in the West End. He specialised in comic character roles, typically flirtatious middle aged men. In 1922 he went into management in partnership with the comic actor Leslie Henson. They had an early success in the West End with a long-running farce, '' Tons of Money'', after which Walls commissioned and staged a series of farces at the Aldwych Theatre that ran almost continuously over the next decade. Alfred Junge
Alfred Junge (29 January 1886, Görlitz, Silesia (now Saxony), Germany – 16 July 1964, London) was a German-born production designer who spent a large part of his career working in the British film industry. Junge had wanted to be an artist from childhood. Dabbling in theatre in his teenage years, he joined the Görlitz Stadttheater at eighteen and was involved in all areas of production. He worked in the theatre for over fifteen years. Junge began his career in film at Berlin's UFA studios, working there as an art director from 1920 until 1926, when he joined the production team of director E.A. Dupont who was relocating to British International Pictures. Frank Edmund George Pettingell (1 January 1891 – 17 February 1966) was an English actor. Pettingell was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, and educated at Manchester University. During the First World War he served with the King's Liverpool Regiment. He appeared in such films as the original version of '' Gaslight'' (1940), '' Kipps'' (1941 - as Old Kipps), and '' Becket'' (1964 - as the Bishop of York). His collection of printed and manuscript playscripts - mostly acquired from the son of the comedian Arthur Williams (1844–1915) - is held at the Templeman Library, University of Kent. Norah Howard (12 December 1900 - 2 May 1968) was a British actress of stage and screen. Biography She was born as Norah Lillian Emily Smeed on 12 December 1900, in Fulham, London, England, her father was Alfred Howard Smeed. Roger Livesey (25 June 1906 – 4 February 1976) was a British stage and film actor. Mark Daly (23 August 1887 – 27 September 1957) was a British film actor. Daly was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 23 August 1887, making his first stage appearance in Swansea, Wales, in 1906. Six years later, in 1912, he made his first London stage appearance at the Shaftesbury Theatre. For three years, he was the principal comedian at The Fred Karno Company, a collection of comedians who worked in both British variety and American vaudeville. Other "Karno Comedians" included Charlie Chaplin and Billie Ritchie. During his time as an actor, Daly took part in excess of 25 motion pictures before his death on 27 September 1957 in England.
