''A Century of Song'' is a 6-CD box set by La Musique Populaire. As the title suggests, ''A Century of Song'' is a chronological overview of songs from the 20th century. Recorded from 1999 to 2003, the songs were originally available for download from their website Eschewing the canonical choices that would define such a chronology, LMP recorded songs ranging from the Tin Pan Alley of the turn of the century, to rap, alternative rock and dance music at the century. As such, ''A Century of Songs'' covers a multitude of genres, including plunderphonics, krautrock, happy hardcore and country. Reviews were generally positive, but some expressed bafflement at the selection of songs and the disparate styles used. The songs were eventually collected in a six CD-R disc box set, limited to 100 editions worldwide. La Musique Populaire
La Musique Populaire is an American indie pop band, made of up members Ryan Bassler and Eric Haugen. The band was originally a quartet, Lorenzo Music in 1992, which grew into a 22 member pop orchestra, called the ''Lorenzo Music Philharmonic''. Faced with legal action from the actor of the same name, the name changed it to La Musique Populaire before the release of their debut EP, ''Auntie Canada'' in 1996. As part of the American indie pop scene of the 1990s, they are defined by their eclectic sound, like contemporaries Ween and The Magnetic Fields. Stars on 45 was a Dutch novelty pop act that was successful in Europe, the United States, and Australia in the early 1980s. The group later shortened its name to Stars On in the U.S., while in the UK and Ireland it was known as Starsound (aka Star Sound). The band, which consisted solely of studio session musicians under the direction of Jaap Eggermont, formerly of Golden Earring, recorded medley recordings made by recreating hit songs as faithfully as possible and joining them together with a common tempo and underlying drum track. "(You're the Flower of My Heart,) Sweet Adeline" is a ballad best known as a Barbershop music, barbershop standard. It was first published in 1903, with lyrics by Richard Husch Gerard to music by Henry W. Armstrong, Harry Armstrong, from a tune he had written in 1896 at the age of 18. According to a 1928 newspaper story, the lyrics were inspired "by a girl who worked at the music counter of a New York department store." "(Won't You Come Home) Bill Bailey", originally titled "Bill Bailey, Won't You Please.... Come Home?" is a popular song published in 1902. It is commonly referred to as simply "Bill Bailey". Bert Williams (November 12, 1874 – March 4, 1922) was a Bahamian-born American entertainer, one of the pre-eminent entertainers of the Vaudeville era and one of the most popular comedians for all audiences of his time. Harry Von Tilzer (born Aaron Gumbinsky, also known as Harry Gumm; 8 July 1872 – 10 January 1946) was an American composer, songwriter, publisher and vaudeville performer.
