The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) is a trade association representing the Australian recording industry which was established in the 1970s by six major record companies, EMI, Festival, CBS, RCA, WEA and Universal replacing the Association of Australian Record Manufacturers (AARM) which was formed in 1956. Jump Incorporated
Jump Incorporated were an Australian rock band founded in 1985 by Geoff Gray (bass guitar, vocals), Martin Sinkovic (drums, vocals), his sister Nada Sinkovic (keyboards, vocals) and Mark Woods (guitar, vocals). All four were members of Moving Parts and Sirens. In late 1986 they added Lee Borkman (keyboards) and Finbar O'Hanlon (lead guitar). They released one full length album, ''Push Push One Day Too Far'', in 1986. Their debut single "Sex and Fame" was produced by Mark Opitz and engineered by Alan Wright. ARIA Music Awards Of 1988
The Second Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards (generally known as the ARIA Music Awards or simply The ARIAS) was held on 29 February 1988 at the Sheraton Wentworth Hotel in Sydney. Cliff Richard was the host, with Bryan Ferry, Feargal Sharkey and Ian "Molly" Meldrum included as presenters of the 21 awards. Other presenters were Rudi Grassner (RCA/BMG boss), Col Joye and Richard Wilkins. There were no live performances and the awards were not televised. A shouting match developed between manager Gary Morris, accepting awards for Midnight Oil, and former ''Countdown'' compere Meldrum who was presenting. Some significant changes were made for the second ARIA Awards. In addition to the categories for the inaugural year, "Best Children's Album" was added. John Justin And The Thunderwings
John Justin & the Thunderwings were an Australian rock band formed by John Justin (guitar, vocals), Paul Hines (keyboards), Gordon Pitt (bass, vocals), Carl Manuel (drums) in 1985. In 1987, Tony Featherstone (bass) replaced Pitt and Robert Wodrow (drums) replaced Manuel. They released one full length album, ''Justice'', in 1986. Debbie Cameron of ''The Canberra Times'' described the impact of the album, "I am not wildly enthusiastic about this type of music so I do not want to be unduly unfriendly about it. Martin Plaza
Martin Edward Murphy (born 1 January 1956), commonly known by the pseudonym Martin Plaza, is an Australian singer-songwriter, musician and visual artist who is a founding member and vocalist and guitarist of the new wave band Mental As Anything. He has also worked with other bands and is an accomplished artist. Plaza also has a solo music career and had a No. 2 hit in Australia with his 1986 cover of the song "Concrete and Clay". The Cockroaches
The Cockroaches were an Australian pub rock band active throughout the 1980s. The band was founded in 1979 by the Field brothers—Paul (lead vocals), John (rhythm guitar, vocals), and Anthony (lead guitar, vocals)—and Tony Henry on drums and Joseph Hallion on saxophone. They were joined in 1981 by Jeff Fatt on keyboards. Charles Fisher is an Australian record producer, often referred to as "The Song Doctor." He is widely known as the producer of Savage Garden's eponymous album which yielded 10 ARIAs (including Producer of the Year, Engineer of the Year and a Special Achievement Award for himself) in 1997. Pseudo Echo are an Australian new wave band that formed in 1982 by founding mainstay Brian Canham on vocals, guitar and keyboards. Other original members were Pierre Gigliotti (as Pierre Pierre) on bass keyboards and bass guitar, and Tony Lugton on keyboards.
