Road Designation
A route (or road) number, designation or abbreviation is an identifying numeric (or alphanumeric) designation assigned by a highway authority to a particular stretch of roadway to distinguish it from other routes and, in many cases, also to indicate its classification (e.g. motorway, primary route, regional road, etc.), general geographical location (in zonal numbering systems) and/or orientation (north-south v. east-west). The numbers chosen may be used solely for internal administrative purposes; however, in most cases they are also displayed on roadside signage and indicated on maps. The Austrian autobahns are controlled-access highways in Austria. A 24 Motorway (Germany)
is an autobahn in northern Germany that connects the large metropolitan regions of Hamburg and Berlin. It was one of the three transit access roads to West Berlin during the Cold War. On that road, there is a 150 km (93 mi) long section that has no speed limit at all (only a recommended speed of 130 km/h), which means that about 65% of that Autobahn can be driven at very high speed. History Planning for the autobahn began as far back as the 1930s; before World War II numerous bridges and sections of roadside shoulder were built between Hamburg and Berlin. The German divide, however, put a hold on further work and it was not until 1978 that construction was resumed, carried out by a GDR work force and paid for by West Germany. A24 Motorway (Italy)
The Autostrada A24, or Autostrada dei Parchi (“Parks Motorway”), is a motorway connecting Rome to Teramo. Starting at the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA - the Rome orbital motorway), the A24 runs broadly north-east past L'Aquila and through a 10 km tunnel under the Gran Sasso before reaching Teramo. It is constructed in an almost completely hilly and mountainous territory with a complex orography. For this reason, the motorway required the adoption of daring civil engineering solutions, with extensive stretches utilising viaducts and 42 tunnels (four of which are longer than 4 km) including the double tunnel of the Gran Sasso, whose length (10.174 km for the northern tunnel, 10.175 km the southern) made it the longest double-tube road tunnel in Europe, as well as the longest road tunnel in Italy entirely in the national territory. Roads in Portugal are defined by the Plano Rodoviário Nacional (PRN, en, National Road Plan), which describes the existing and planned network of Portuguese roads. The present plan in force is the 2000 National Road Plan (PRN 2000), approved in 1998. It replaced PRN 1985, which itself had replaced PRN 1945. The A24 is a major road in England that runs for from Clapham in south-west London to Worthing on the English Channel in West Sussex via the suburbs of south-west London, as well as through the counties of Surrey and West Sussex. Route Between Clapham and Dorking, the A24 closely follows the route of the old Roman road Stane Street.
