A. S. A. Sami
Arul Soosai Anthony Sami (1915–1998) also written as A. S. A. Samy, was an Indian director and screenwriter who worked in Tamil films. Early life Born in 1915, A. S. A. Samy was from a devout Catholic family. His father had a business enterprise in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). He spent his young life there and had his education in Colombo. He received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the University of London. He started his career as a teacher in a college in Colombo. He studied literature of both the East and the West and showed a flair for writing plays. He wrote his first play ''Bilhanan'' based on a Sanscrit literature known as Bilhaniyam. He produced the drama and staged during his College's annual day celebrations. The family returned to India in late 1930s. Career A. S. A. Tamil cinema, also known as Kollywood is a part of Indian Cinema; primarily engaged in production of motion pictures in the Tamil language. Based out of the Kodambakkam neighbourhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it is popularly called ''Kollywood'' - a portmanteau of the words Kodambakkam and Hollywood. The first Tamil silent film, ''Keechaka Vadham'', was directed by R. Nataraja Mudaliar in 1918. Thanga Padhumai
''Thanga Padhumai'' () is a 1959 Indian Tamil language film starring Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini. The film was co-written and directed by A. S. A. Samy, produced by M. Somasundaram under Jupiter Pictures, and musical score by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy. ''Thanga Pathumai'' proved to be a hit in its re-release, and won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil for the year 1959. Plot Manivannan is a physician, but a simpleton. Selvi, daughter of a rich trader of Uraiyur was modelled on Kannagi as the personification of female virtues. The emeralds in the eyes of Kannagi Devi statue at Uraiyur are precious and attract the princess Raja Vadana of the neighbouring kingdom. To get the gems, the commander Balakumaran and Raja Vadana send their dancer Maya Mohini to dance at the Uraiyur festival. ''Velaikari'' () is a 1949 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by A. S. A. Sami and produced by M. Somasundaram under Jupiter Pictures. It was based on the play of the same name written by C. N. Annadurai, while incorporating plot details from the Alexandre Dumas novel '' The Count of Monte Cristo'' (1844). The film stars K. R. Ramasamy, V. N. Janaki and M. V. Rajamma. ''Ponni'' is a 1953 Indian Tamil-language film starring Sriram, Lalitha and Padmini. The film was released in 1953, and the Telugu version ''Oka Talli Pillalu'' in the same year. Plot The story is about a less privileged woman (P. Santha Kumari) left with two daughters. She loses one girl ("Baby" Chandrakumari, later Padmini), who is found by a wealthy man (D. Balasubramaniam). He changes her name to Kanmani and brings her up in luxury. She becomes proud. The struggling mother sends the other girl Ponni ("Baby" Asha, later Lalitha) to work in Kanmani's house. Kanmani ill treats her and once pushes her down the staircase, which injures Ponni badly, and she lands in hospital. The rich man has an adopted son Sundaram (Kaushik). His brother, a ne'er-do-well (Sriram), misbehaves with both Ponni and Kanmani. In the process, Ponni tries to save her sister, and lands in prison, accused of murder.
