A. O. Segerberg
Albert Oscar Segerberg (1881—13 July 1941) was an Australian cameraman. He began shooting films as early as 1896, and later worked as a cameraman for Pathé Frères, the Australian Photo-Play Company and the Fraser brothers. Pathé or Pathé Frères (, styled as PATHÉ!) is the name of various French people, French businesses that were founded and originally run by the Pathé Brothers of France starting in 1896. In the early 1900s, Pathé became the world's largest film equipment and production company, as well as a major producer of phonograph records. It is the first known cinematic dramatisation of this story and is considered a lost film. Longford claimed it was the first Australian film to shoot scenes at sea. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. The NFSA collection first started as the National Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (within the then Commonwealth National Library) in 1935, becoming an independent cultural organisation in 1984. ''A Romance of Burke and Wills Expedition of 1860'' is a 1918 Australian silent film. The plot is fictional and is loosely based around the Burke and Wills expedition. Plot Robert O'Hara Burke leads an expedition from Melbourne to the north of Australia, including William John Wills, John King, Gray, Dandells and Brahe. Although he reaches the Gulf of Carpentaria along with Wills and King when they return to their base at Cooper Creek they discover their comrades have left without them. Burke and Wills both die but King is rescued by aborigines and survives. A fictitious romance was added to the story. It was the fourth in his series about the rural family, the Hayseeds, and centers on Dad Hayseed entering his horse in the Melbourne Cup. It is considered a lost film. Synopsis Dad Hayseed buys a horse for £20 called Cornstalk and it starts winning so many local races he decides to enter it in the Melbourne Cup. He is accompanied by his son Jim (the trainer), cousin Harold (jockey) and Mum Hayseed. Jim falls in love with an actress, and Mum has a nightmare about washing steps of Parliament House. Australian Photo-Play Company
The Australian Photo-Play Company was a short-lived but highly productive Australian film production company which operated from 1911 to 1912. Establishment Stanley Crick, who was Pathe Freres manager in Australia, and Herbert Finlay had enjoyed success producing a series of Australian films directed by John Gavin. They decided to establish the Australian Photo-Play Company in June 1911 under the management of Crick with capital of £20,000. (Gavin later claimed it was his idea to form the company.) It was stated in the initial prospectus the aim of the company was to purchase Crick and Finlay's film manufacturing business. The initial directors of the company Philip Lytton, Stanley Crick, Dr Sherlock Mason, Arthur Upjohn, and Douglas Selkirk. ''Whose Was the Hand?'' is a 1912 Australian silent film directed by Alfred Rolfe. It is considered a lost film. Plot A young man is heavily in debt and decides to get out of it by robbing his uncle. He does this with a criminal accomplice. During the course of the robbery, the uncle enters and fights with the nephew. The nephew kills his uncle and wipes his blood stained hands on the panel of the door. The uncle's secretary is first on the scene and is arrested. However fingerprints of the blood stained hands do not match. Detective Sharp investigates further, leading him to the nephew, whose finger prints do match. The film ends with the rescue of the murdered man's daughter from a burning building, and the arrest of the murderer's accomplices.
