A. Durai Arasan (22 October 1922 – 10 April 1998) was an Indian politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly (India), Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate from Arantangi (State Assembly Constituency), Arantangi constituency in 1962 Tamil Nadu state assembly election, 1962, and 1967 Tamil Nadu state assembly election, 1967 elections. Early life Durai Arasan was born in 1922 as a last son of Palaiyavanam Zamin family at Palaiyavanam (Pudukkottai District), Tamil Nadu, to Sir Vijaya Arunachala Vanagamudi Pandarathar in Hindu religion in Kallar community. His father was a crowned Zamindar of Palaiyavanam who was one among the very few Zaminsdars praised by the public. He had two elder brothers and two sister. The Madras Presidency, or the Presidency of Fort St. George, also known as Madras Province, was an administrative subdivision (presidency) of British India. At its greatest extent, the presidency included most of southern India, including the whole of the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra state and some parts of Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha and the union territory of Lakshadweep. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (; DMK) is a political party based in the state of Tamil Nadu where it is currently the ruling party having a comfortable majority without coalition support and the union territory of Puducherry where it is currently the main opposition. 1962 Tamil Nadu State Assembly Election
The third legislative assembly election to the Madras state (presently Tamil Nadu) was held on 21 February 1962. The Indian National Congress party, led by K. Kamaraj, won the election. 1967 Tamil Nadu State Assembly Election
The fourth legislative assembly election of Madras State (later renamed as Tamil Nadu) was held in February 1967. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led coalition under the leadership of C.N. Annadurai won the election defeating the Indian National Congress (Congress). Anti-Hindi agitations, the rising prices of essential commodities, and a shortage of rice were the dominant issues. K. Kamaraj's resignation as the Chief Minister in 1963, to concentrate on party affairs, along with persistent rumors of corruption had weakened the incumbent Congress Government. This was the second time after Communist Party of India winning Kerala assembly elections in 1957, for a non-Congress party to gain the majority in a state in India, and the last time that Congress held power in Tamil Nadu.
