Road Designation
A route (or road) number, designation or abbreviation is an identifying numeric (or alphanumeric) designation assigned by a highway authority to a particular stretch of roadway to distinguish it from other routes and, in many cases, also to indicate its classification (e.g. motorway, primary route, regional road, etc.), general geographical location (in zonal numbering systems) and/or orientation (north-south v. east-west). The numbers chosen may be used solely for internal administrative purposes; however, in most cases they are also displayed on roadside signage and indicated on maps. Use of letters Letters are often used in road designations to indicate a class of roadways. Within such a class, roads are distinguished from each other by a road number. Quebec Autoroute 19
Autoroute 19, also known as Autoroute Papineau (Papineau Highway), is an autoroute in Quebec. It crosses the Rivière des Prairies via the Papineau-Leblanc Bridge, connecting the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville in Montreal and the Duvernay neighbourhood in Laval. There are plans to widen Route 335 to four lanes, which would be a continuation of A-19 from Autoroute 440 to the Athanase David Bridge, on Rivière des Mille Îles, and Bois-des-Filion to relieve congestion along that stretch. The lands reserved for the project were expropriated in 1973 in conjunction of a future extension of the A-19. In 2007 Transport Minister Julie Boulet gave the green light for studies in the area. A super two highway exists in Bois-des-Filion, north of Route 344 and south of Autoroute 640, just north of Pont David, which runs on the Highway 19 right-of-way. The A19 is a major road in England running approximately parallel to and east of the A1 road. Although the two roads meet at the northern end of the A19, the two roads originally met at the southern end of the A19 in Doncaster, but the old route of the A1 was changed to the A638. From Sunderland northwards, the route was formerly the A108. In the past the route was known as the East of Snaith-York-Thirsk-Stockton-on-Tees-Sunderland Trunk Road. Most traffic joins the A19, heading for Teesside, from the A168 at Dishforth Interchange. Route Doncaster–Selby The southern end of the A19 starts at the ''St Mary's Roundabout'' with the A630 ''Church Way'' and A638 just to the north of Doncaster itself near to the parish church; this junction has been improved in recent years. A19, also known as Batalha bypass, is a motorway in Portugal connecting São Jorge (junction between IC9, N1 and N8) to the same N1 in South Leiria and extending further to the junction with N109 in North Leiria. The motorway is 16.4 km long and was built in two phases. The section between South Leiria and North Leiria was completed in 2010 and resulted from the enlargement of the existing IC2/ N1 single carriageway expressway. On the other hand, the section between São Jorge and South Leiria (the actual Batalha bypass) was a newly built section and was completed in 2011. A19 is partly a toll road: the section from South Leiria to North Leiria (the Leiria bypass) is toll-free, as it was built over an existing road, while the section between São Jorge and South Leiria has tolls.
