9th Arizona State Legislature
The 9th Arizona State Legislature, consisting of the Arizona State Senate and the Arizona House of Representatives, was constituted from January 1, 1929, to December 31, 1930, during the first and second years of John Calhoun Phillips's tenure as Governor of Arizona, in Phoenix. The number of senators remained constant at 19, while the number of representatives increased from 52 to 54. The Democrats held large majorities in both houses, although the Republicans made significant inroads in the House. Graham County is a county in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of the 2020 census, the population was 38,533, making it the third-least populous county in Arizona. The county seat is Safford. Graham County composes the Safford, Arizona Micropolitan Statistical Area. Andrew Jackson Bettwy
Andrew Jackson Bettwy (September 24, 1894 – October 29, 1950), an Arizona Democrat, served as Mayor of Nogales, Arizona, from 1935 to 1937, was an Arizona delegate at the Democratic National Conventions of 1924 and 1928, and 1928, and was an unsuccessful candidate for governor in the 1930, 1932, 1934, 1936, and 1938 primary elections and in the 1932 general election. George Truman (politician)
George E. Truman (1865-1929) was an American politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 9th Arizona State Legislature, holding the seat from Pinal County. During the Spanish–American War, he was one of the first men up San Juan Hill. Biography Truman was born in 1865 in Sauquoit, New York. He moved to Arizona in 1890 from Utica, New York, and went to work as a deputy sheriff, under his brother, William Truman, Pinal County Sheriff, serving for three consecutive terms. He lived in Florence, Arizona. With the outbreak of the Spanish–American War, Truman volunteered and joined Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, traveling to San Antonio, Texas, where he joined Jim McClintock's company, before traveling on to Tampa, Florida. Merton Martensen
Merton Martensen was an American politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 9th Arizona State Legislature, holding one of the two seats from Pima County. Biography Martensen was born in 1894 in Barron County, Wisconsin. Martensen moved to Arizona in 1909. After moving to Arizona he worked in various occupations, as waiter, milkman, bellhop, and publicity agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad. During the Mexican Revolution, Martensen served as the driver for Pancho Villa. With the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Martensen went to Canada and joined the Canadian Army. He transferred to the British Army in order to see action earlier, and was gassed twice before transferring to the British Flying Corps, where he was involved in a plane crash, and was eventually made a blimp pilot.
