''98 Mute'' is the debut release by the hardcore punk band, 98 Mute. It was released on May 3, 1996, on Theologian Records. It was co-produced by Pennywise's guitarist Fletcher Dragge and features Justin Thirsk on drums, the brother of the late Jason Thirsk, Pennywise bass player. It was the first of four albums before the band split up. They followed this album with '' Class of 98'' in 1998. Redondo Beach (Spanish for ''round'') is a coastal city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, located in the South Bay region of the Greater Los Angeles area. Hardcore punk (also known as simply hardcore) is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Pennywise is an American punk rock band from Hermosa Beach, California, formed in 1988. The band took its name from the antagonist in Stephen King's horror novel '' It'' known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Between their 1991 self-titled debut and 2005's '' The Fuse'', Pennywise released an album every two years on Epitaph Records, a label owned by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz. Eddie Ashworth (born in Inglewood, California) is a record producer, engineer, mixer, musician, university professor, entrepreneur and writer, best known for his work in the alternative rock and indie rock genres. His primary instrument is mandolin, and also plays guitar and assorted keyboards. Ashworth has also worked with artists in a wide variety of other genres including dub, folk, hard rock, hip hop, tropicano, punk, and classic rock. Early life As a child Eddie Ashworth became interested in music technology and would play with the analog consumer recording gear his father had around the house. Due to his early interest in music his parents bought him a Sears Silvertone guitar, and leaned to play piano and mandolin. Like its predecessor, the self-titled debut, it was produced by Fletcher Dragge of the band, Pennywise and one of the tracks, "Picture This", was featured on Epitaph Records' ''Punk-O-Rama'' series of compilations as they left to join them. Overview The style was considerably tamer than their debut effort with toned-down vocals and longer songs, all contributing to a more original sound. Jason Thirsk
Jason Matthew Thirsk (December 25, 1967 – July 29, 1996) was the bass player of the California punk rock band Pennywise from 1988 through his death in 1996. He grew up in Hermosa Beach, California. Pennywise was formed in 1988 by Thirsk along with singer Jim Lindberg, guitarist Fletcher Dragge, and drummer Byron McMackin. Thirsk reportedly did not like to travel. Thirsk had been in rehabilitation for alcoholism and suffered from depression. Death and legacy At the age of 28, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His girlfriend discovered his body approximately a day after his death. The band decided to continue making music after Thirsk's death, first by dedicating their performances to him at Warped Tour 1996. They later brought in bass guitarist Randy Bradbury from One Hit Wonder. The band then set about writing an album of new material which was made up of mostly anti- suicide messages.
