The 99th Division () was formed in February 1949 from 2nd Regiment of 7th Division, 18th Regiment of 11th Division of PLA Bohai column of Huadong Field Army and defected Republic of China Army 538th Regiment of 180th Division. Under the command of 33rd Corps it took part in the Chinese civil war. The division was then composed of: *295th Regiment; *296th Regiment; *297th Regiment. After the Shanghai Campaign the division stationed in Baoshan, Shanghai. In November 1950 the division was re-organized and renamed as 16th Public Security Division() while detaching from the Corps. By then the division was composed of: *46th Public Security Regiment; *47th Public Security Regiment; *48th Public Security Regiment. 99th Light Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)
The 99th Light Infantry Division (german: 99. Leichte Infanterie-Division) was raised in November 1940 and remained in training at Bad Kissingen until the summer of 1941. In June it took part in Operation Barbarossa—the German invasion of the Soviet Union—and operated in Poland and Ukraine under Army Group South until the fall, when it was withdrawn to Germany for reorganization as the 7th Mountain Division. In early 1942 the 7th Mountain Division was transferred to serve under the 20th Mountain Army in Lapland, and remained there until it withdrew into Norway at the beginning of 1945. It surrendered to the British there at the end of the war in May. 99th Guards Rifle Division
The 99th Guards Rifle Division was a Red Army division of World War II. It was formed from the 14th Guards Airborne Division in January 1944. It fought in the Svir-Petrozavodsk Offensive between June and August 1944. It became the 99th Guards Airborne Division in August but was converted into infantry again in December 1944 and January 1945. The division fought in the Budapest Offensive and in the defense against Operation Spring Awakening. At the end of the war it participated in the Vienna Offensive and the Prague Offensive. In August 1945 it transferred to the Far East and was converted into an airborne division in 1946. The division served in the Far East for the next decade and was disbanded in 1956. The 99th Rifle Division (Russian: 99-я стрелковая дивизия ''99-ya strelkovaya diviziya'') was an infantry division of the Soviet Union's Red Army which fought in World War II. It was first formed in 1924, destroyed, reformed and raised to Guards status, and then reformed once again. First formation It was first formed in April 1924 at Cherkassy in the Ural MD on the basis of the 44th Rifle Division as the 99th (territorial) Rifle Division. In 1926 it consisted of the 295th, 296th, and 297th Rifle Regiments. In 1931 it was translated(transferred) on a personnel basis. In 1939 it took part in the Soviet invasion of Poland as part of the 13th Rifle Corps, 12th Army, Ukrainian Front. On 29 September 1939 the division entered Przemyśl. Recognised as one of the best divisions in the Army under Andrey Vlasov's command in 1940. 99th Infantry Division (United States)
The 99th Infantry Division was formed in 1942 and deployed overseas in 1944. The "Checkerboard" or "Battle Babies" division landed at the French port of Le Havre and proceeded northeast to Belgium. During the heavy fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, the unit suffered many casualties, yet tenaciously held its defensive position. In March 1945, the 99th advanced into the Rhineland, crossing the Rhine River at Remagen on March 11. After fighting in the Ruhr area, the unit moved southward into Bavaria, where it was located at the end of the war. The 99th Infantry Division, the "Checkerboard" division, gained its nickname from the division's insignia. The insignia was devised upon the 99th's formation in 1942, when the division was headquartered in the city of Pittsburgh. The blue and white checkerboard in the division's insignia is taken from the coat of arms of William Pitt, for whom Pittsburgh is named.
