Metro Toronto Convention Centre (originally and still colloquially Metro Convention Centre, and sometimes MTCC), is a convention complex located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada along Front Street (Toronto), Front Street West in the former Railway Lands in downtown Toronto. The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television presents an annual award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role to the best performance by a lead actress in a Canadian film. The award was first presented in 1968 by the Canadian Film Awards, and was presented annually until 1978 with the exception of 1969, when no eligible feature films were submitted for award consideration, and 1974 due to the cancellation of the awards that year. From 1980 until 2012, the award was presented as part of the Genie Awards ceremony; since 2013, it has been presented as part of the Canadian Screen Awards. From 1980 to 1983, only Canadian actresses were eligible for the award; non-Canadian actresses appearing in Canadian films were instead considered for the separate Genie Award for Best Performance by a Foreign Actress. Anne Wheeler
Anne Wheeler, OC, (born September 23, 1946) is a Canadian film and television writer, producer, and director. Biography Graduating in Mathematics from the University of Alberta she was a computer programmer before traveling abroad. Her years of travels inspired her to become a storyteller and when she returned she joined a group of old friends to form a film collective. From 1975 to 1985 she worked for the NFB where she made her first feature film, ''A War Story'' (1981), which was about her father, Ben Wheeler and his time as a doctor in a P.O.W. camp during World War II. The war is a common theme in her work and she revisited it later in her films '' Bye Bye Blues'' (1989) and ''The War Between Us'' (1995). Her first non-NFB film was '' Loyalties'' in 1986. Developed through interviews and improvisational work with a group of Black Canadian youth in Montreal, the film stars Pat Dillon as Pat, a young woman who moves in with her boyfriend Fabian (Fabian Gibbs) after getting pregnant. The film was produced by the National Film Board, through its Alternative Drama program. The film premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival in August 1986. The film's soundtrack consisted primarily of reggae recordings by Jimmy Cliff. Leon Marr (May 26, 1948 – July 22, 2019) was a Canadian film and television director and screenwriter, who won a Genie Award for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 8th Genie Awards in 1987 for '' Dancing in the Dark''. ''Intimate Power'' (french: Pouvoir intime) is a 1986 Canadian thriller film. Plot A government ministry's fast-rising head of security asks a shadowy figure, Meursault, to steal a bag from an armoured truck. Meursault goes to Théo, a former night club owner, in prison for two years on false charges, who is being released in exchange for information about Montreal's underworld.
