85th Division (2nd Formation)(People's Republic Of China)
1st Independent Division of Fujian Provincial Military District () was formed on April 1, 1967 from the Public Security School of Fujian province. The division was composed of three regiments (1st to 3rd). The division stationed in Fuzhou, Fujian. In September 1967 the divisional HQ moved to Minhou County. In July 1969 the division was renamed as 85th Army division() and all its regiments were renamed as follows: *253rd Infantry Regiment (former 1st); *254th Infantry Regiment (former 2nd); *255th Infantry Regiment (former 3rd). The division was then transferred to 29th Army Corps. In November 1969 the division moved to Lianjiang County. Artillery Regiment was activated, and the division was put under direct command of Fuzhou Military Region. In 1970 72nd Garrison Regiment was attached to the division. 85th Landwehr Division (German Empire)
The 85th Landwehr Division (''85. Landwehr-Division'') was a unit of the Imperial German Army in World War I. The division was formed in November 1914 as the Breugel Division (''Division Breugel''), named after its commander, Generalleutnant Willem Hendrick Clifford Kocq von Breugel, and became the 85th Landwehr Division on September 13, 1915. The division was disbanded in 1919 during the demobilization of the German Army after World War I. The Landwehr was the third category of the German Army, after the regular Army and the reserves. Thus Landwehr divisions were generally made up of older soldiers who had passed from the reserves, and were intended primarily for occupation and security duties rather than heavy combat. It participated in the German defence in the Battle of Normandy, and took part in the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes. Operational history The 85th Infantry Division was raised in February 1944 and placed under the command of Lieutenant General Kurt Chill, previously the commanding officer of the 122nd Infantry. Participating as an occupational division in German-occupied France, the 85th was part of the 15th Army's rear-guard in Northern France during the D-Day landings. 85th Motor Rifle Division
The 85th Leningrad-Pavlovsk Red Banner Motor Rifle Division was an infantry division of the Soviet Red Army converted to a motorised formation in 1957. It was part of the Russian Ground Forces until it was reorganised as the 32nd Separate Motor Rifle Brigade in 2009. In 2016, the 32nd Separate Motor Rifle Brigade was reorganised as the 228th Motor Rifle Regiment of the 90th Guards Tank Division. The 85th was formed in 1941 as the 85th Rifle Division from the 2nd Guards People's Militia Division of the Leningrad People's Militia. World War II 1st formation The division was originally formed in 1931 in the Ural MD, seemingly at Chelyabinsk. The 85th Infantry Division also known as "Custer Division" (named after the cavalry commander George Armstrong Custer) was an infantry division of the United States Army in World War I and World War II. It currently exists as the 85th Support Command.
