In the North American Numbering Plan for telephone service, area code 828 is the telephone area code for most of the western third of the U.S. state of North Carolina. It includes the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as most of the Foothills. The largest city in the 828 territory is Asheville. The city of Hickory is often grouped with the Charlotte metropolitan area, but uses 828 rather than Charlotte's 704 and 980. Area code 828 was split from the 704 numbering plan area on 18 May 1998 to provide relief from numbering plan exhaustion brought about by the popularity of pagers and cell phones. Andrews is a town in Cherokee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,781 at the 2010 census. History Cherokee era Indigenous peoples lived in the area for thousands of years before European encounter. By the late 16th or 17th century, the Cherokee had a pronounced presence in the area. Dillsboro, North Carolina
Dillsboro is a town in Jackson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 232 at the 2010 census. Dillsboro attracts tourists traveling to the Great Smoky Mountains. Burnsville, North Carolina
Burnsville is a town that serves as the county seat of Yancey County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. History The town was founded on March 6, 1834, from land conveyed by John "Yellow Jacket" Bailey, and it was named after Captain Otway Burns, a naval hero of the War of 1812. In 1909, a statue of Captain Burns was given to the town by his grandson, Walter Francis Burns Sr., and it was set on a granite pedestal in the center of the town square.
