83rd Mixed Brigade
The 83rd Mixed Brigade was a unit of the Spanish Republican Army created during the Spanish Civil War from the militarization of the Iron Column. It came to operate on the Teruel, Levante and Central fronts. History Front of Teruel The unit was created in March 1937, on the Teruel front, from the militarization of the Iron Column. The 83rd MB was integrated into the 41st Division, along with other recently militarized forces. Joaquín García-Morato Ruiz was appointed as head of the brigade. It went on to publish its own newspaper, the "''Columna de Hierro''", printed in Vinaroz. In July the 83rd MB was sent to the Albarracín sector as reinforcement against the nationalist counteroffensive that followed the Battle of Albarracín. After its arrival in the area, it came to replace the Republican 42nd Division, which was left very broken after the nationalist attacks. Republican Faction (Spanish Civil War)
The Republican faction ( es, Bando republicano), also known as the Loyalist faction () or the Government faction (), was the side in the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939 that supported the government of the Second Spanish Republic against the Nationalist faction of the military rebellion. The name Republicans () was mainly used by its members and supporters, while its opponents used the term ''Rojos'' (Reds) to refer to this faction due to its left-leaning ideology, including far-left communist and anarchist groups, and the support it received from the Soviet Union. At the beginning of the war, the Republicans outnumbered the Nationalists by ten-to-one, but by January 1937 that advantage had dropped to four-to-one. The Central Region Army Group, es, Grupo de Ejércitos de la Región Central (''GERC''), was a military formation of the Spanish Republican Army during the last phase of the Spanish Civil War. It gathered the most powerful section of the republican military and would endure until the 1939 surrender. Borriol
Borriol is a town and municipality located in the province of Castellón, Valencian Community, Spain. History Numerous archaeological remains, including the rock paintings of l'Albaroc indicate that the Borriol area was populated in antiquity. The Via Augusta was used by the Roman military, and the existence of a milestone in the municipality is preserved in the municipal museum. The remains of a castle stand high on a rock overlooking the town centre. Borriol received a settlement charter, granted by King James I of Aragon, in 1250. The 14th Division was one of the Division (military), divisions of the Spanish Republican Army that were organized during the Spanish Civil War on the basis of the Mixed Brigades. The division participated in the Battle of Guadalajara. History The unit was partly created from the Mera Column, led by Cipriano Mera and elements from other Mixed Brigades. The new division was integrated – together with the 11th Division (Spain), 11th and 12th Division (Spain), 12th divisions – in the new 4th Army Corps (Spain), 4th Army Corps, under the command of Enrique Jurado Barrio. Rafael García Valiño
Rafael García Valiño (24 October 189829 June 1972) was a Spanish army officer who fought in the Spanish Civil War for the Nationalist faction. Early life He was born in Toledo, and enrolled in the Infantry Academy at age fifteen. In 1916, he earned his commission as a lieutenant, volunteering to fight in the Spanish Army of Africa. In Morocco, he was wounded several times and was promoted to major due to his field performance. In 1935, he studied in the Superior Military School. Spanish Civil War The outbreak of the Civil War surprised him, as he was spending the summer on the Basque coast. He crossed Republican lines to reach Pamplona to join up with the Nationalist Army of the North, led by Emilio Mola. He commanded several Carlist units, and with the First Navarrese Brigade participated in the campaign of the North.
