7th Parliament Of Singapore
The 7th Parliament of Singapore was a meeting of the Parliament of Singapore. Its first session commenced on 9 January 1989 and was prorogued on 21 April 1990. Its second session commenced on 7 June 1990 and was prorogued on 29 January 1991. It commenced its third session on 22 February 1991 and was dissolved on 14 August 1991. The members of the 7th Parliament were elected in the 1988 general election. Parliament was controlled by a People's Action Party majority, led by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew who subsequently handed over to Goh Chok Tong. The Speaker was Tan Soo Khoon. Tan Soo Khoon
Tan Soo Khoon ( zh, c=陈树群, p=Chén Shùqún; born 1 September 1949) is a Singaporean former politician who served as Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore between 1989 and 2001. Education Tan attended the Anglo-Chinese School before graduating from the University of Singapore (now the National University of Singapore) in 1971 with an honours degree in business administration. He also served as the general secretary of the students' union of the University of Singapore (now the National University of Singapore) in 1969. Political career Tan started assisting in the Kuo Chuan constituency in 1971, where he learned about the needs of the working-class in Singapore society. It is his strong desire for social equality and improving the lives of the less fortunate that has made his parliamentary speeches well known amongst his fellow MPs. Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency (SMC) is a single member constituency in Bukit Batok of Singapore. It used to exist from 1972 to 1988 as Bukit Batok Constituency and was renamed as Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency (SMC) as part of Singapore's political reforms. The current Member of Parliament for the constituency is Murali Pillai of the People's Action Party (PAP). History In 1972, the constituency was formed from merging parts of Bukit Timah, Chua Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang constituencies and was known as Bukit Batok Constituency. Ahmad bin Mohamed Mattar (born 13 August 1940) is a former Singaporean politician and member of the Cabinet. Education An alumnus of Raffles Institution, Ahmad graduated from the University of Singapore with a degree in physics in 1963. He completed his master's degree at the University of Sheffield on a Colombo Plan scholarship and then his doctorate at the University of Singapore. Career He was a lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic and conducted the first large-scale study on the effects of traffic noise on housing estates; the study would later inform future legislations and studies on traffic noise.
