7 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment
7 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment is a reserve force regiment of the South African Army Air Defence Artillery Formation. History Origin With the reorganisation of the Citizen Force in 1959/60, the headquarters and three independent anti-aircraft batteries were combined into one regiment known as the University of Cape Town Regiment. The regiment mobilised during the state of emergency during that period and was equipped with 3.7 inch guns. The regiment was organised with three batteries of two troops each with a radar troop. 7 Light Anti Aircraft was raised from its mother unit, UCTR, on 1 April 1969, when excess personnel from Cape Garrison Artillery was absorbed. In 1988, during Operation Packer, 72 Battery supplied air cover at the Chambinga Gorge near Cyuito Cuanavale in Angola. The South African Army Air Defence Artillery Formation is the controlling entity of all South African Army Air Defence Artillery units. This Formation consists of both regular and reserve units. History Origin, World War 2 and the Bushwar Air Defence Artillery in South Africa dates back to 1 April 1939 when the 1st Anti-Aircraft Battery was established as part of the Coast Artillery Brigade. The first anti-aircraft training took place at Brooklyn airfield and at Klaasjagersberg, near Cape Point, in 1939. The 1st Anti-Aircraft Battery departed for active service in East Africa in 1940, and during the Second World War, gunners of Anti-Aircraft units won the respect of both friend and foe with their courageous actions. Regiment University of Cape Town was an artillery regiment of the South African Army. As a reserve unit, it had a status roughly equivalent to that of a British Army Reserve or United States Army National Guard unit. It was part of the South African Army Artillery Corps. 7 South African Infantry Division was a formation of the South African Army, active from the 1960s to 1999. History Origin of 7 Division from existing and new Brigades 7 Division and 17, 18 and 19 Brigades were established on 1 April 1965. Difficulties with manning levels saw the disestablishment of 7 Division on 1 November 1967 and its replacement by the Army Task Force (HQ) and 16 Brigade.
