78th Moplah Rifles
The 78th Moplah Rifles was an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army. The regiment's origin could be traced to 1794, when it was raised as the 35th Madras Battalion. At the beginning of the 20th century the basis for recruitment was changed from Madrasis to Moplahs - who are Muslims of Arab origin located along the coast of Malabar. The Moplahs had a reputation as an aggressive race and it was hoped to make use of their martial skills in the Indian Army. A problem from the beginning was that the population numbers available for recruitment were limited. In 1907, shortly before disbandment, the regiment numbered only 350 men. Two battalion-sized regiments of Moplah Rifles were accordingly raised (the 77th and 78th MR) and the second of these was posted to the North West Frontier in 1905 to be tested under active-service conditions. 78th Field Artillery Regiment
The 78th Field Artillery Regiment is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army. Initially activated on 1 July 1916, the 78th Field Artillery Battalion did not see action in World War I, but would later be reactivated at the start of World War II and participate in the campaigns for Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Central Europe, and the Rhineland with the 2d Armored Division. The 78th Illinois Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The 78th Regiment Indiana Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 78th Indiana Infantry was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana for 60 days service and mustered on August 5, 1862 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel William L. Farrow. The regiment was engaged in guard duty at Evansville, Indiana and operated against guerrillas in Kentucky until October 3, 1862.
