Neil Gehrels
Cornelis A. "Neil" Gehrels (October 3, 1952 – February 6, 2017) was an American astrophysicist specializing in the field of gamma-ray astronomy. He was Chief of the Astroparticle Physics Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) from 1995 until his death, and was best known for his work developing the field from early balloon instruments to today's space observatories such as the NASA Swift mission, for which he was the Principal investigator. He was leading the WFIRST (now called the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope) wide-field infrared telescope forward toward a launch in the mid-2020s. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Gehrels died on February 6, 2017, at the age of 64. On January 10, 2018, NASA announced that Swift had been renamed the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, in his honor. Franz Gehrels
Franz Gehrels (22 March 1922, in Eckernförde – 6 November 2018, in Irschenberg) was a German-American economist and university teacher. In his scientific work he devoted himself in particular to the further development of the theory of international trade relations. In the 1970s he became an internationally recognized pioneer of advanced theory of international trade, among others by providing cutting-edge research on the optimal structure of trade and capital taxes. Life Franz Gehrels, the son of the physician Frank Gehrels (1885–1974) and his wife Marie, b. Barsoe (1901–1974) was born in 1922 in Eckernförde, Northern Germany. His parents emigrated with their two-and-a-half-year-old son to the US in March 1924 via Bremerhaven and Ellis Island, New York City, to San Mateo, California. Jürgen Carlos Gehrels FIET (born 24 July 1935) is a German businessman, and a former Chief Executive and Chairman of Siemens UK (Siemens Holdings plc). Early life He was the son of Dr Hans Gehrels and Ursula da Rocha. He attended the Technical University of Munich and the Technical University of Berlin. Career Siemens From 1965-79 he worked for Siemens AG in Germany. Siemens UK He became Chief Executive of Siemens UK in 1986. In 1995 he was responsible for opening the Siemens Semiconductors plant on North Tyneside, a £1.1bn inward investment; the largest-ever inward investment in the UK. The plant was opened by the Queen in May 1997. The site is now the Cobalt Business Park, off the A19. He left as Chairman of Siemens UK in September 2007.
