711th Division (Vietnam)
The 711th Infantry Division was a division of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), first formed in early 1972. Vietnam War The Division was initially formed from the 31st and 32nd Regiments in early 1972 and the 97th Regiment was added to it in May 1972. On 19 August 1972, the ARVN 5th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division abandoned Firebase Ross in the Que Son Valley, southwest of Da Nang, to the Division. A dozen BGM-71 TOW missiles were left with abandoned equipment and fell into PAVN hands. The ARVN 4th Regiment recaptured Ross on 9 September 1972. The People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN; vi, Quân đội nhân dân Việt Nam, QĐNDVN), also recognized as the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) or the Vietnamese Army (), is the military force of the Vietnam, Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the armed wing of the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam. A division is a large military unit or Formation (military), formation, usually consisting of between 6,000 and 25,000 soldiers. In most armies, a division is composed of several regiments or brigades; in turn, several divisions typically make up a corps. Historically, the division has been the default combined arms unit capable of independent Military tactics, operations. Smaller combined arms units, such as the American regimental combat team (RCT) during World War II, were used when conditions favored them. 2nd Division (South Vietnam)
The 2nd Division () was a division of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN)—the army of the nation state of South Vietnam that existed from 1955 to 1975. It was part of I Corps that oversaw the northernmost region of South Vietnam. History In 1960 the 2nd Field Division was redesignated the 2nd Infantry Division. Firebase Ross (also known as Hill 51) was a U.S. Marine Corps, Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) fire support base located in the Quế Sơn District, Quế Sơn Valley southwest of Hội An, Quảng Nam Province in central Vietnam. History The base was located in the Quế Sơn Valley along Route 535, approximately 27 km southwest of Hội An. In January 1968 the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division had its headquarters at Ross. BGM-71 TOW
The BGM-71 TOW ("Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided") is an American anti-tank missile. TOW replaced much smaller missiles like the SS.10 and ENTAC, offering roughly twice the effective range, a more powerful warhead, and a greatly improved semi-automatic command to line of sight (SACLOS) that could also be equipped with infrared cameras for night time use. The 1975 spring offensive ( vi, chiến dịch mùa Xuân 1975), officially known as the general offensive and uprising of spring 1975 ( vi, Tổng tiến công và nổi dậy mùa Xuân 1975) was the final North Vietnamese campaign in the Vietnam War that led to the capitulation of Republic of Vietnam. After the initial success capturing Phước Long Province, the North Vietnamese leadership increased the scope of the People's Army of Vietnam's (PAVN) offensive and captured and held the key Central Highlands city of Buôn Ma Thuột between 10 and 18 March.
