6IX RISING
6IX RISING: Toronto’s Rap Ascendence (pronounced ''six rising'') is a Canadian documentary film about the hip hop culture in Canada. The film was directed by Shawney Cohen and released on November 16, 2017. It was distributed by Vice Media's online channel Noisey and made in collaboration with Nicolas Girard and Rafael Ruiz for Worship Studio. Background The documentary showcases the rising hip hop scene of Toronto, after the blockbuster success of Drake and The Weeknd. The film analyses the attention on how the success of these artists has turned the city's local rap scene into a hyper-competitive, and creative environment where young artists are competing for attention on the world stage. Artists and repertoire manager Lucas Prince, was involved with connecting the documentary makers with artists from Toronto to participate in the film. Quinton Armani Gardner (born May 10, 1996), professionally known as Pressa, is a rapper and singer from Toronto. Early life Quinton Armani Gardner was born on May 10, 1996, in Toronto, Ontario to a Filipino mother and a Jamaican father. He was five weeks old when his father was sentenced to 15 years in prison for second-degree murder, which left his mother to care for him and his older brother. He grew up in an area known as Driftwood in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood of Toronto. Career 2016–2018 Gardner rose to prominence after the release of his hit single "Novacane", which was produced by frequent collaborator Murda Beatz. Oakwood Village, formerly known as Oakwood–Vaughan, is a neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Located in the former suburb of York, the neighbourhood is a Business Improvement Area (BIA); it has an annual arts festival and a public library built in 1997. Denzel Spencer (born April 18, 1996), better known by his stage name Roy Woods (also stylized as Roy Wood$), is a Canadian singer and rapper. Name Of Toronto
The name of Toronto has a history distinct from that of the city itself. Originally, the term "''Taronto''" referred to a channel of water between Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching on maps as early as 1675 but in time the name passed southward, and was eventually applied to a new fort at the mouth of the Humber River. Fort Toronto was the first European settlement in the area, and lent its name to what became the city of Toronto. John Graves Simcoe identified the area as a strategic location to base a new capital for Upper Canada, believing Newark to be susceptible to American invasion. A garrison was established at Garrison Creek, on the western entrance to the docks of Toronto Harbour, in 1793; this later became Fort York.
